I have a buggered up scope mounting hole on a bridge and I want to rechase the threads and just want to make sure this is common thread pattern...

Let me know its on a whitworth rifle import.

Also can a guy just buy a single tap for this or will I need to buy awhole set???

6-48 is pretty standard. If you are just chasing the threads, get a "taper" tap, and you may have to go to one of the big houses or Brownell's.

Brownells used to sell "oversized" 6-48 screws to fix this sort of thing. They might have an oversized tap you can use to sharpen up the threads.

The 6-48 is common to the gunmaking trade but not common as in find it at the local ace ahrdware. Unless you live in Lakewood CO where my Ace does stock them due to its proximity to the CO School of trades. Seems the students go through enough for the ACE to warrant stock such an uncommon size.

Midway or better yet, Brownells stock them.

I have found Midway's taps are junk, and brownells premium taps are not much farther behind them.

They get the job done, but are not of good quality.

Here's where I buy most reamers and taps. Quality is good to excellent, even on the import taps.

Try JGS, the reamer maker in Oregon. I buy most, if not all, of my site mounting/ring screw taps from them. Beats the heck out of MidWay and Brownells. Good taps, priced right, and delivered promptly. They make good reamers, too.

Good Site, Dave!
Didn't know these guys were out there, but glad they are. Looks like they carry a good assortment- good to have prices to compare, too, to MSC, etc.

Thanks

I know this isn't what you asked Fla, but when I bugger a 6-48 screw hole (or, more likely, buy a rifle that has one buggered), if it isn't a collector's item where 100% originality is important, I bore and tap out the screw hole(s) for 8x40 gun screws.

The 8x40's are a lot more resistant to shearing under recoil, and they are also much easier to keep from cross threading in the future.

These work like a charm.

Yeah, go with Alberta's advice; go to 8x40s. I often open up good holes to that anyway.

I was about to post a question about 6-48 scope mount screws...stripped a mount screw on a Leupold base for a Weatherby MkV, but the screw hole in the rifle is ok. I see 6-48 1/4" screws at Brownell's, would these be the ones?

Make sure the head is the same; flat vs tapered seat. And the Leu screws will use torx heads instead of slots; more recent ones do. But 6-48 screws will screw into your receiver if that is what you are asking. Why don't you get the right ones from Leupold?

The screws from Brownells are flat heads and Torx like the originals. Leupold only has an entire Torx screw assortment which is more expensive than just buying the base screws. On the other hand, if I get the set from Leupold that means I will have plenty of hardware available the next time I lose or mess up a screw...

Find an auto repair shop or machine shop that buys from Barnes or Lawson. Check their catalog and see if, for a slight upcharge, they will order the taps, dies, screws, etc you may need. Industrial strength products used in OTR trucks and heavy equipment. These places can be a great source for these items at very reasonable prices.
