Lapping lugs on Remington Model 700
I had one Remington Classic in 7 Mag and another in 35 Whelen. Neither shot very well, and I noticed that the lugs had very uneven contact. I took the rifles to the local gunskith, and he lapped the lugs, I was very impressed by the difference when I go the rifles back. Both shot closer than I can hold them, and are very "unfinicky" about what you shoot in them.
I have another Classic in 223 that doesn't shoot well, and the lugs on that show uneven contact. I am thinking of lapping the lugs myself. Has any one tried this, and what is the procedure if you have done it?
Thanks!

Welcome bodunchar,

You gotta love those "Gunskiths"... [Big Grin]

There are a lot of things the gun owner can do to help the accuracy of their weapon, and lapping lugs is one of the simpler things the average person can do.

Without going into detail, I would suggest doing a search in the "gunsmith" forum on "lapping lugs" and read what has previously been written on the subject. If that doesn't do it for you, let us know and someone can help steer you in the right direction.

Good luck,

Malm

From what I understand, when you lap the luggs you want even pressure applied to the bolt face as you lap the lugs, I believe Brownells sell just the right tool for the job. Unfortunatly I don't have a catalouge in front of me but I'm sure a search on their website would help.
