Older style mauser (BRNO 22F) safety questions

I bought a BRNO 22F from JudgeG (thanks!) and it has a low mount safety on the left side of the bolt shroud, it reminds me of a Buehler style low safety on the opposite side. It works fine and I actually like the location, it is more convienent then the right sided versions. Two questions. First are there any negatives to this style safety, second does anyone know a source to get this style safety to refrofit other rifles with it. Thanks in advance.

The Brno and FN left side safeties are probably the best ever made for the 98. They work like the originals, clear a scope, and are located on the same side as your thumb.

The Brno version does not lock the bolt down and can be opened with the safety on. The FN model locks the bolt and must be flipped off to clear the chamber.

The FN model is easier to use with a scope in place, but stick out a bit with the scope removed. The Brno is slightly slower to flip off with a scope, but is more streamlined with the scope removed.

Both models can be worked silently by applying a little pressure forward or rearward with your thumb as you ease the lever off safe.
I'll try to add close up pics of each later. It is easy to convert a 98 shroud to use an FN safety. You might be able to convert a streamlined Mark X shroud to use a Brno style safety, but there would be more machining involved.

Hey Kurt, thanks for the tip on operating a M22f safety quietly. That had been a concern of mine the few times I had it in the field last season.

I have three of these rifles and once owned another, I dislike that safety, but, each to his own. It is easy to fit either a two position or three position Mod. 70 style safety to these which is what I prefer as I have so many of them and am used to it.

I would agree though, that the FN left side safety is probably the best of the bunch and one could be fitted to lock the bolt-if you care-by replacing the shroud with an FN one. It would be less streamlined, so you might not want to.

You have a superb rifle there and I think that you will find it's accuracy second to none. I think that these were probably about the finest production rifles ever made in terms of fit and finish and the extremely rare roundbolt variation is so nice that it makes most custom rifles look dowdy.

Thanks, I am very happy with the rifle and was thinking about retrofitting my two CZ 550's with similar safeties. So the general opinion is that I have to buy some FN bolt shrouds with safeties? I don't really care if I can operate the bolt with the safety on or not, as long as the safey works reliably I am happy!

The CZ550 does not use a Mauser 98 system and the bolt shrouds are therefore not interchangeabe. The CZ550 uses the BKK series of actions. I think AHR makes a model 70 style shroud, but I don't know of anyon making a 98 style for it.

FYI, the FN shroud can be made to open with the safety on simply by grinding the locking tab off the tip of the post.

I think that Jim Wisner is making some safeties for the CZ rifles. He has made both Mod. 70 and Mod. 98 styles of wing safeties for various rifles in the past, so, you mighht contact him and see what he has. I have used his products and they are absolutely first class.
