I own an old savage 340 and it's barrel had expired! i want to buy an original savage barrel and renew the old gun. my question is : is it trus that due to the action construction the only tool need i wrench taking away the old bbl and screw a new one so easy!, no need for headspace adjustment if the factory barrels are used? true or false?

you are 1/2 right.. it's very easy to change the barrel... BUT the headpsace MUST be set. With a savage, that's "easy" but I still suggest having a msith do it.

what 340 ya got? A friend had a 222 in one, that the first 2 shots would be touching, the 3rd 1" away, and the shots would drift so much after that you would have thought it was loose...

25 years of the same thing, it wasn't loose, just how it shot

It is a 340A in 3030 and it shoots well 4-5 shots under 1 inch 50 yds with or without 2� scope!!regards and how can i find gogo go no calibration tools in Sweden???!!! to adjust the headspace?

i don't know how to write off-line, but i can tell you the best results are with norma factory loaded 150 gr and my own brew sierra 125 gr and 135 pistol bullets and 33 gr n0rma 202 powder runing 2400-2300 fps. sadly the bbl begun to show erosion at just in front of the chamber. I saw on the net the original savage 3030 bbl for only 60 bucks not long time ago. i thought it would be nice to give a new life to the old soldier,

ps- it shoots great with pmc cowboy loads too 170 gr lead@1300 fps

Some of you are going to balk at this, but...........

You could use cartridges and masking tape instead of gauges. Make sure a new factory cartridge will chamber freely. Make a "gauge" with a cartridge that has two layers of masking tap on the base. Trim it neatly. That one should be your no-go gauge.

My stepfather had the 340 in 222 also, it is now rechambered for 223 and sitting in the safe. It hasn't been shot much since the conversion, but before the conversion he would shoot five shot groups at 100 that you could cover with a dime. his dad has a 340 in 30-30 still. Neat little guns, good shooters, if I ever see what cheap I might grab it as a kick around 223 (cheap gun with cheap ammo!)

DP if you are getting 1" at 50 yards why worry about rebarreling, with a higher powered scope, a trigger job don't know if have done that, and some tinkering, maybe some load development you will have a real shooter, how much can you expect out of the ole 30 WCF. 30-30's are good out to 250 yards at best there is only so much accuracy you are gonna need in this scenerio,

I took a 325 Stevens 30-30 and reamed .222 barrel from GPC to .219 Zipper, I used gauge but the tape mentioned above should work fine.

Is 30-30 ammo hard to get in Sweden? i would think you are the only guy on the block with a 30-30. I used to have a Savage 340 30-30, gave it to my little brother.

no 3030 is avaiable at market not really cheap because norma ended to load it and still sako loads it and winchester and pmc cowboy loads are avilable. i love 3030 because it is so fun to shoot and it is true american cowboy round and with little touch it can compete with the other long range caliber for varmint hunting and it is much better than 222r which is popular for roe deer hunting in Sweden.i cast my own bullets but difficult to find loading data with norma powder and cast bullets.

I have a 340 in .30-30 and with Remington 170 gr RN bullets over IMR-4064, it shoots groups under 3/4 inch at 100 yards regualarly. I picked up a factory new barrel from Sportsmen's Guide.

Thanks for the reply. i visited the site and the barrels were only 49 bucks!! really cheap. but i have find another problem according to the swedish laws i ought to have importing licens which it wouldn't be easy and according to the us laws i ought to have exporting licens!!!%/#�%
