Looked in the sight drawer and I see I have a Marble Goss micrometer bolt sleeve sight for a Winchester 54 also, some day will have to see if a 54 bolt sleeve can be grafted onto a 70 so I can use this sight on it.

There is also a Belding & Mull bolt sleeve sight, made in the 1920s and 30s, for 1903, 1917, Rem 30 and Krag. Very solid but bulky, have one on a Krag.

There is also a Holland & Holland cocking piece sight, a little like the Rigby, can be seen in old H&H catalogs on Mausers. I have one on a H&H 6.5 Norwegian Krag.

That sight that came as an option on M/S and Oberndorf rifles that folds flat into the wrist is a Baillie-Ghroman, not sure I have the spelling 100% right. General problem with all cocking piece sights - and tang sights on lever actions - is that they should not be used on heavy recoiling rifles or even on an '06 if you are a stock crawler. One more bolt sleeve sight available in the late 30s and early 40s was the Marble Goss, a sort of miniature Lyman 48. Made for 1903, M70, have had those, and for Krag, tho I have never seen one. A very well made click micrometer sight. I also have a Gus Pachmayr bolt sleeve sight on Elmer Keith's famous .285 OKH Mauser. Some day I will learn to work a digital camera and post photos.

This is the back of my Haenel bolt. Does anyone recognize or know which peep might fit? [/image]

According to an old Lyman advertisement the Haenel used both the 1 & 2 Bolt peep sights. In order to install them they sold what was called a Nut for mounting that was supplied with a tap & drill. The 88s (Haenel & Schilling) did not have enough metal for a dovetail on the rear of the bolt, which is the reason for the nut.

2mp. Wow am I glad you are on AR. I have been reading and writing and calling for three weeks and you have answered and directed me in two days. Thanks.
I now can narrow my search for the "nut" and peep rather than having one made.

By the way. Do you know of anyone that might have some parts or pieces or would work on putting a Haenel together for another AR member. I happened to bump into someone who has a rifle very similar to mine missing a part or two and would like to find someone able to put it back together. His double set is intact but he is missing a sear and spring and a few other assorted pieces. Now that you have mentioned the schilling I may also look into those parts and pieces since his is a little different from mine and may not be a Haenel.
Thank you very much.

The load for the cartridge is 3.67 grams Gewehr Blaettchen Pulver (early smokeless powder). That converts to about 56.5 grains. IMR 3031 is similar to early powders.

Stahl Mantel Geschoss means steel jacket bullet.

I dont know anyone with parts but any of the bolt parts should work from any of the Model 88 military issue rifles. If part of the set trigger mechanism is missing they would have to be handmade. Most of the 88 sporters imported for sale in this country came from Haenel or Schilling both of Suhl, Germany before WWI. If your friend needs to see what the parts look like for a Schilling I have one of these and would take pictures if need be. Email me at mjpetrov@acsalaska.net

I believe this the Lyman nut for the Mannlicher-Haenel.

The dovetail on the Lyman peep should slide right in. If this is the part you need, I should have one lying around somewhere. Send me a PM.
