Gentlemen

According to my drawings the,
6,5-06. Case lenght: 63,35mm or 2,494 inches, this is more or less a 3006 necked down. It has 17 degrees, 30 minutes shoulder.

6,5X64 Brenneke. Case lenght: 64,52mm or 2,540 inches. Which is a 7X64 brenneke /270 win that been necked down to 6,5. It has a 17 degrees, 30 minutes shoulder.

6,5X65RWS. Case lenght: 65,00mm or 2,56 inches. basicly a 280 rem with a shorter neck in 6,5. It has a 20 degree shoulder.Cheers

Since the question involves the 6.5X65mm RWS, the key to the answer appears to be the fact that the RWS number has a shorter neck, hence head-to-shoulder dimesnsion is greater. This lends well to the idea of being able to set the shoulder back pretty precisely when sizing the 6.5X65RWS brass to fit a 6.5/'06 chamber. Of course, trimming the cases to the proper overall length is also required, and if you have the rifle already, you can customize overall case length to that chamber also.

Thank you Johan,
Do you know of a source for 6,5 x 64 Brenneke brass?
Thanks,
JCN

I think that is a wildcat, at least I have never run into either cases nor loaded ammo. Could be wrong, naturally

I found this reference, but my abilities with Deutsch are limited to "Ein vater pfunder mit kase, bitte."

I guess I am not understanding the various answers, Will the 6.5-06 chamber clean up with that 6.5x65RWS reamer and does anyone have one. We can buy as much os the 6.5x65 RWS brass as you want and at a discounted price. I need a gunsmith to convert the thing if it is possible.
Thanks

It should clean up, just barely. You might want to have your gunsmith set the barrel back one turn, and then cut the new chamber.

Ray's Gunsmith Shop, 3199 Elm Ave, Grand Junction, Co 81504, (970)434-6162

Ray Montgomery does a lot of 6.5 work, he may have a reamer (thanks to Idared for that information).

If not Dave Kiff of Pacific Tool and Grinding

Dave Kiff [pacpes@medford.net] can make one for you.

Where did you find the source for 6.5 x 65 RWS brass? 'Er, let me re-phrase that. How much per piece of 6.5 x 65 RWS brass. I'm sure a lot of people would be interested in taming their 6.5-06 wildcats with high quality correctly headstamped brass.

PS I'm not trying to be a smart-ass about setting the barrel back a thread. When the cartridges are that close it can be a mess getting everything straight and true. I had to have a 257 Roberts AI conversion done twice because there was too much headspace when the first gunsmith "just cleaned up the chamber".

JCN, Thanks for the response. The 6.5-06 in question is in a supurb custom rifle. The inletting is so fine I would hate to set a barrel back and risk making the barrel channel look cheap. I may regret this but Natchez Shooters Supply has the brass on sale for About $14.00 a box of 20 instead of $17.00. That is not cheap but is a great price for RWS brass of any sort!! I will try some of your reference gunsmiths for advice.

If everything is straight and true now, hopefully a good gunsmith can do the trick. If it works out you will have to have Scrollcutter cut the chambering deep and proud into the barrel. Thanks for the info about Natchez.

John, this article is of no particular interest. It is one of the usual gun-rag "What calibers to choose for what game" articles - with some of the European cartridges added. But other than spending a pleasant 5 minutes reading it, I doubt it will be of lasting value.

Thanks Mike,
Glad to know that you also have gun magzines over there that are mainly suitable for lining the bottom of the bird cage.

I have seen some Hungarian ammo and I think Horneber have cases with the correct headstamp. For "do it your own" I would use 270 win or 7X64 cases and neck down.

I know that Brenneke are considering to bring line of factory ammo again. Even better would be if they brought back the Starkmantel Geschoss in bonded version

Leonard,
I would set back the barrel on thread and camber it into 6,5X65 RWS. Mr. Dave Kiff at pacific precision grinding should be able to help you...

Cheers

Some information provided by W. Reb, in the German "Wild und Hund" forum:

There were several .264 wildcats based on the 7x64:

a 6.7x64 by Weidinger, back in the 1970s
a 6.5x64 "Brenneke" by Kepplinger
a 6.5x64/40 by Reb

If any of these reached some commercial status I do not know.
To my knowledge the 6.5x65R RWS is currently the only one that is factory-loaded. It's also the only one for which brass is listed in the Johannsen catalog (RWS).

Looking at the specs of both cases, I'd say that the 6.5X65 RWS reamer would very definitely clean up a 6.5/'06 chamber.
