Other than a replacement barrel and chambering, what would be involved in making a 35-284 from a .308 Win in a Win model 88?

Magazine probably, bolt face is same-same. Sounds like a real meat-getter!

i built a 35-284 on a rifle that was originally a 243. the magazine fed fine with only some polishing of the feed lips. the 88 was available in 284 but i'm sure those magazines are worth a fortune.

The magazines would be the deciding factor. Jim Wisner has the correct ones. I think one problem would be the max overall length of 2.80" as designed for that rifle..

I was going to do the same thing on a Savage 99C. I even collected two .284 mags at gun shows ten years ago. The .284 shoulder is farther forward and the rib on the magazines reflected this. I would be surprised if a 284 would feed correctly from a .308 mag. If you can't find/afford the mags a .358 should feed just fine from the standard mag. I lost interest in the project and traded the rifle off before I made the conversion. I just recently sold the two .284 mags for $75 each in the classifieds here. Unless you are doing an ultra low cost conversion, I don't think the mag (how many do you really NEED?) would be a deal breaker. Don't expect 35 Whelen velocities from a 2.8" OAL but it should pick up a bit on the standard .358.

If I understand correctly, a .284 magazine from Wisners will handle a 35-284 cartridge? I already have a win 88 with a replacement barrel chambered in .358 Win that hopefully could be rechambered to 35-284 and with the new magazine be good to go? I think the .308 based cases all have an OAL of about 2.80"+/-. Would there be any practical advantage to a 35-284 over a .358 Win cartridge?

Except the 35-284 dies will be about $150 or so depending who you get them from . Ballisticly, the wildcat will be a little faster, but not too much more than 100-150fps. The animal on the other end won't know the difference. Do the one you like. It's only money. I'd rather have something unique and will probably end up doing a 35-284 on a 24/47 Mauser someday. If you do it, please post the results. I have a friend that has two 88's and maybe I can talk him out of one.

Model 88s came in .358 winchester. I would convert an 88 to .358. If you want a 35-284 find an 88 in .284 and convert that. (of course they are collector items).
