Is there anything special about these rifles in strength or accuracy? I am looking at a left hand 30-06 in mint condition but with finish cracking on stock. It is a jap rifle with outstanding wood and a perfect bore. Can get it fairly cheap, Is it worth bothering with?

No replys so far, It seems these guns are a real love or hate thing. Some say too heavy, Some don't trust the locking lugs or like the stock shape. I was thinking of picking this one up and going 9.3x62 since i am a lefty and the stock fits me well. Just wondering if the action is a good one to build on. We leftys have a small pool to pick from.

boltface, Welcome to the forum. I think you actually answered your own question. Weatherbys do tend to be a love/hate thing. You mentioned that you can get it fairly cheap ... that is always a plus. As a push-feed action, there is nothing wrong with a Weatherby, except as you mentioned, maybe a little heavy. For a 9.3x62, that might not be a bad thing. If the price is right, and it's a good fit, why not go for it? Regards, Wayne E.

I like the MkV, it is very smooth, has low bolt lift and a very positive safety. The trigger can be made very serviceable, although I had to have the springs altered in mine to get it where I wanted in terms of pull weight. On the negative side, it is a tad large and heavy for a .30-06 (or 9.3x62) sized case. If that does not bother you, go for it. - mike ********************* The rifle is a noble weapon... I own and shoot several Mark V Weatherbys and I like them. My favorite is a Mark V ClassicMark in 300 Wby. So with that said. I would not want one in 30-06, too much action for the cartridge, overly heavy you can put the 06 into a more compatible action. As to the 9.3x62, I am not sure it is even legal to put that into a Weatherby and if so, it is still immoral. The 9.3 belongs in a 98 Mauser action with either classic styling or with a slightly European flair. Just my opinion and that doesn't mean much. If it is cheap enough go ahead and buy it and use it as is. Can't go wrong it is a perfectly serviceable rifle in 06.

With that Weatherby MKV action why not rechamber to the new .375 Ruger then the weight will be warranted...............or alternativily if yolu want something a little bigger and still very versatile a .416 Taylor would be very nice and I would think minimal work to change it over. Another caliber would be sako's 9.3x66 ?? if you want a9.3 cal. The 9.3 is meant for a mauser style gun

For me it has the best safety design of any rifle. The only down side is it's often hard to get the trigger where you want it. I think their are some after market triggers Timney? maybe?

If you want a metric cartridge and the action is long enough, why not go for an 8 x 68S? It's a great all-around cartridge, with almost .338 power. Bolt face will have to be opened up a bit, but the same is true of any magnum cartridge you might select. If you leave the same barrel I think a 300 H&H will clean the chamber, but in a Weatherby you might as well go for .300 Weatherby, which is probably the cheapest conversion option. _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.

Thanks all: I'm picking up the rifle today, I can always use another 06, but the wood will be coming off and replaced by synthetic as i plan to hunt it. The rifle does not seem to be as heavy as my CZ550 6.5x55, Those are heavy guns! Anyway i hope it is a shooter, No freebore in standard calibers i hear so will work up a good 200 gr. partition load and see how that works. Also i'm hoping it likes 168 TSXs as i have a few of those. I'll try and post my results when i get her running. Boltface.
