Will a stock made for a Rem 700 short action fit an older Rem 722 without too much 'smithing? Thanks, folks. BigIron

BigIron The biggest difference is in the tang area. On the 721/722 the tang is shorter and more blunt or cut more square. I hope that makes sense. Any way the 700 stock should fit with little work. Good luck, Shawn

The bolt notch will be a little bit off and you will have to cut out for safety clearance. It is best to use a 700 trigger guard/bottom metal instead of trying to use the 722. Also, the 722 has the "lump" on the barrel that will need to be inlet into the barrel channel.

Thanks for the replies. The 722 I've been looking at has a pair of drilled & tapped holes a couple inches forward of the rear sight lump. The holes have screws in them that look to be typical scope mount screws, but their location seems odd unless someone was planning a scout-style scope mount. A .257 Roberts with 24" barrel is an unlikely candidate for a scout scope mount. Does anyone know if these screw holes were factory provided for some reason? Thanks again, BigIron

Big Iron, About a year ago I got into the very same project, As Jay suggested, use the BDL bottom metal and a little stock relieving for the safety and thats about it. Mine has the knob turned off the barrel, so that wasn't a problem for me. How I looked at that factory stock for all those years is hard to believe. What a difference. Any 722 that i have seen didn't have any tapped holes in the barrel, someone put them there. I got my bottom metal from Remington and the stock off the internet. About $125 in the whole thing as I remember it. Stepchild 2

The previously mentioned holes may have been for a Lyman or Unertl target scope block. Those delicate little numbers were mounted on the barrel for the front mount.

Thanks, all, for the input. Ruger#3, I hadn't even though about someone having mounted a Unertl scope on that rifle, but it was considered a long-range varmint rig, and a Unertl or Lyman long-tube model would have been the choice "back in the day". I suspect that's what those holes are for. By the way, as regards your handle, I'd love to see the Ruger #3 reintroduced. Let's see, I'd like to see them in .221 Fireball, 30-30 Winch, .250 Savage, 454 Casull, 475 Linebaugh, and .500 S&W. Dreams...... [ 07-29-2003, 04:24: Message edited by: BigIron ]
