I have an early 1970's Model 700 in a 17 Rem. Although I haven't had any problems with it, I was thinking that I should still take apart the bolt and clean everything, since I'm sure it has never been done before. Is there an easy procedure to do this? The Winchesters are extrememly easy, but I haven't seen anything on the Rems. Is it even worth doing?

It's easy. You'll see two "notches" under the rear of the bolt. Hook one on the edge of your workbench, grab the bolt body, and pull down on the bolt body. When you have moved it about 1/4", you'll notice a slot appear on the piece that will now be protruding from the back of the shroud. Insert a penny in that little slot & relax the pressure. Now just take the bolt shroud & unscrew it, being careful not to knock the penny out. Simply reverse to reassemble. A field expedient method of the same procedure is to stick the back end of the bolt under the last crosswise lace (nearest your toes) on your boots & hook the notch under the lace. Pull up towards your body on the bolt, put the back of your knife blade in the slot, and proceed as above.

If you want to do this on a somewhat regular basis,or have other Remingtons to clean bolts on, I suggest you buy the tool that Sinclair makes for the job. It cost around $25 and is one of my best buys. It works great and you don't have to worry about the penny slipping. Bob257
