I have recently purchased a very nice VZ24 custom rifle in 338-06 and it is very well done, however the Leupold scope bases leave a bit to be desired. On the rear base I can see a slight gap, perhaps .010 between the base and action on the bolt side of the action, and a slight gap on the front base but just at the front part of the base. I do not think the proper bases were used. Does anyone know what the proper Leupold STD 2pc bases are supposed to be? Perhaps model # 52370 for matte finish? Would it be the same as the FN mauser?

I am assuming it already has Leupold STD on it? The bases for a Gew 98, 98k, or other military mauser would be correct. These are relieved for the clip hump and have a very short hole spacing on the rear base, approx 3/8" - 1/2". FN or Mark X bases will fit as well if the clip charger hump has been removed. They have a larger hole spacing. Just to check if the front base is correct or if the receiver may be out of whack, the base should either say M98 or Rem 700. The rear base should be marked M98 or FN depending on which one it is. The front base for a large ring mauser is the same as a Rem 700 and also the same whether military or commercial mauser. Leupold STD bases are marked on the underside. PA Bear Hunter, NRA Benefactor
