Winchester M70 experts wanted: Iron sight issues

I have a modern M70 .375 safari express and in attempting to zero the iron sights it is out of whack. Shooting 6+inches high at 50 yards. I measure the front sight 280" not including the dovetail and the front sight base .437". The numbers don't gibe in the winchester catalogue which would explain it problem. The rear sight is bottomed out so there is not room for adjustment and doesn't look like clearance for filing the notch. Looking for input on getting the correct front sight height as there is another front sight base listed which is higher as well as higher sights. Winchesters option is to send it back which will be a last resort.

Thanks!

OK does it shoot open sighted to point of aim at say 50-100 yards? I measured excluding the dovetail. It could be the front sight base then I will measure to the bottom of dove tail. Thanks for the info

18" exactly.

Thanks for any info

In the winchester parts catalog it lists front sight bases (ramps) as 7/16" for the .458 and 9/16 for the .375. This one is .437 so it appears it is a .125 inches lower than the part specified by winchester. Of couse I can't talk to anyone that knows anything at winchester, besides "send it in". I am thinking of ordering the taller FSB and seeing if I can get the rear blade off the bottom of the stop.

seems like the taller front ramp is for a super express, which is like my classic with the folding rear, which is 9/16 but is longer and screw holes seem different (wider spaced). Taking the rear apart I saw that there still was some room in the oval parallel screw holes in the blade. so I removed it, filed the base so it would drop lower, had to open up the elevation screw threads at the top so it would drop farther and now it is bottomed out just as far as it can go without opening up the oval clamp screw holes on the blade. It appears I can file out the notch some as well. We'll see if this works not sure it was enough but a good start.

Distance to target divided by distance between sights (use the same units, inches, mm, etc) = "factor"
Error to be corrected divided by "factor" = amount of adjustment required.

50yd = 1800"
1800/18 = 100
6" / 100 = 0.060
Raise the front sight to lower the impact point.
