Gentlemen,

I picked up some bedding compound over the weekend and was getting ready to bed an old rifle of mine. I decided that before I bedded it I would give it a good cleaning with Wipeout overnight. I patched it out and didn't there were no signs of copper at all.

While getting it out of the stock I looked down the barrel from the chamber end and I was somewhat dismayed at what I saw. It looks like somone tried to beadblast the first two inches of the rifeling in the barrel. There are noticible pits in the throat area. I tried running some hoppes, Shooters choice, lead cleaner, and more wipeout down the barrel and it's not smoothing out or comming loose, so I'm thinking it's just barrel erosion. Any thoughts on this?

I am guessing the gun has had about 2xxx rounds down it. It's a 22-250 and most of the loads have been 50-52gr bullets. I have not noticed any decrease in accuracy as of yet, but I haven't been checking.

Does this sound right?

Tell your freind to start saving up for a good barrel & keep shooting that one till the accuracy goes south then rebarrel it.

Shoot straight. Big Grin

Try to look unimportant. Your enemy might be low on ammo.

If you're just now thinking about bedding this gun, you're a little late. Wait until you get that new barrel on it. Big Grin

I've got a Springfield barrel here that probably looks just like yours or worse. Before I replaced it I chopped it back to 20" with a hacksaw, crowned it with a file and a round stone. Cosmetically speaking, it was butt ugly, both inside and out, but it shot just fine.

Hello Waffen,
We are not far apart. I am in CP west of you.
I have a Rem M700 25/06 that has been fired about 500 rounds. When using the Hoppes patches (some sort of synthetic not cotton) the first 6 inches of the bore ahead of the chamber feels bead blasted.
I can't see it at all. The bore looks perfect but I can sure feel the roughness. I bought this rifle new and I have noticed the roughness for the last 100 or so rounds.
