This is indeed a possible explanation. This could also have been the thought of the time as well, or a later invention.

I have also heard about a Sako stamped L571 but with a A-style bolt. It was made in the year they changed the markings, so I guess Sako from time to time put togehter what they had at hand.

L61R was pre-mid 80's

main diff between L61R and A3/A5 is the smaller tang and a remington 700-ish bolt shroud on the L61R

A3/A5 had enclosed bolt shroud with cock-indicator and bigger tang

A3 is 30-06 boltface, A5 is belted mag bolt face

all three have the same magazine length
