I'm sure he'll chime in when he see's this post.

I know what they are going to be used for. Hopefully he'll share some of this info with the crew. hint, hint Big Grin

Terry-

I want to thank you and jjs for posting these pictures.

Beautiful wood. Great eye candy.

If I may be so bold as to ask, what grade of blanks were these from Denli?

By the way, thanks to Terry, I too, am a satisfied Denli customer. I would not hesitate to purchase other blanks from him.

jjs, thanks for sharing.

Happy Easter!!

Terry,

Thanks for posting the pics!

I have to give credit to Terry, ForrestB, ForrestA, and my Gunsmiths clap for pointing me in the right direction, picking out blanks. I will end up with a much nicer finished product because of these Gentleman beer

Both are for "Big Bore" projects, so straight grain was important factor and limited my choices significantly. I think they are still pretty nice considering that requirement.

My picture taking ability is limited, so much of the subtle figure, contrast, and fiddleback does not show up...they are better than the pics show Wink

The first blank pictured is "Exhibition" grade while the second was "Speical" grade. Ali Denli did provide what amounted to be a 10-12% discount, negotiated given what we were buying, ForrestA also purchased a blank.

While not cheap, I was hard pressed to find anything close to quality for the price. Ali was considerate, responsive, shipped the day funds arrived and willing to search for blanks to fill my request.

Let me know what you guys think!!!

Thanks, Jim

Happy Easter!!

Those are outstanding. Keep us posted on the progress, and maybe provide us with a little more information about your plans for these. What, who, when, etc...

OUTSTANDING grain flow on those beauties. I personally love the top picture best - the fiddleback is jaw dropping.

What type of stock profile are you using for this project? Also, who is doing the stocking?

I ask, because as you know, I have a wood blank that I'm using for Ewan's .30-06 project. I would be interested in learning about what it is you are going with.

Have a great holiday weekend, my friend!

These blanks are for a pair of DGRs. As of today (I am about 90% sure of this), one will be a 375 H&H and the other a 404 Jeffery.

My plan is to make these two as close to a "Matched Pair" as reasonably possible. I would like them to weigh no more than 9-9 1/2 lbs. scoped and loaded (4 or 5 down).

I plan on sharing more information on these rifles at a later date, after I get a further handle on the specifications....

I appreciate all your comments on the blanks...

Thanks!

How thick are the blanks? I noticed some are pretty narrow.

Amazing looking blanks gentlemen.

First blank is 2.3" and the second is 2.4" thick...I was told this thickness should work?? I sure hope so....Thickness was a consideration is choosing these blanks!

If you go to the Denli website:

http://www.denli-gunstocks.com

You will see a "Contact" section. Go to Management and Sales try that. That number is in Switzerland. They have a Warehouse there and I think that is where Ali can be reached most of the time.

He has a mobile number: try this or e-mail first...

011 41 78 617 43 32 but if you send him an e-mail, he will respond promptly. Time difference is about 8 hours...

I think Ali told me he was heading back to Turkey in 3 weeks or so...He may have new items then...but, as I understand it, most of Denli's stuff goes into Europe before it hits the Website.

Not sure what catagory you are looking for but recently I had him search in the Warehouse and he posted more blanks...

Good luck....

Yep! There is another one I really like and should have purchased rotflmo. Two projects are enough right now but the one I have my eye on would look dandy on a 300 H&H...next project. Smiler care to take a guess at which one??

Forrest, it is still April clap Eeker

I looked them over again and really can't tell, 701 & 731 are somewhat similar to those you bought but almost all will make stunning stocks. He has some really great blanks for $400-$500. ForrestB thinks 651 is a sleeper, a very traditional looking blank:

Great blank, but I am an odd duck I guess. I like 651 better than any other on the site, and next would be in the 350-465 dollar range.

651, is an incredible blank and under rated in my book. To me that is an exhibition grade blank.

To me there is not another stock on the site that even compares, however I am an rookie at all of this. As I have already said, after 651 I dont like anything until down around the 350-465 range.

A lot of Denli's high-dollar blanks don't look that good to me, but this one does. #552-A in "Pairs" has some of the nicest marbling and color I've ever seen. I'd want to see a proper pattern on the wood, as it might turn down too soon. Nonetheless, it is a striking blank; but at $1700, I must leave it on the shelf. In my book, it's not worth twice the price of #651.

I personally like this style of stock - it is a 7X57 built by Todd Ramirez for Boddington:

Amazing! That is basically the exact rifle I was trying to have built! even the caliber was in the running until the 6.5 Swede was selected over it! Amazingly nearly all the features and items I wanted are on this rifle, only I wanted a solid buttplate not skeleton.

I meant that I'd like to see a realistic pattern drawn on the stock so as to better judge the layout. Most of the layout patterns Denli has drawn on his blanks bear no resemblance to a real stock profile.

That 552-A looks gorgeous. I'm glad someone here bought it so we might have the chance to see the completed rifle.

There are a few things that bug me about the Ramirez rifle, but it looks nicely done. For certain, the blank you just purchased puts the Boddington blank to shame.

Keep us posted on how your rifle turns out, or we'll track you down and hurt you. Big Grin

Guys:

I don't mean to hijack this thread or anything, but since it's been asked, I'll give you some info about my rifle project.

This project is for my son. I wanted to build him a very special rifle for him to use when he is older and pass down to his child. I wanted something that would make sense for most of the hunting he would do, so I decided to have it chambered in .30-06.

All my life the Winchester pre-64 Model 70 awas the action by which everything was compared. For this project, I wanted to use a pre-64 Model 70.

I found one on here that was manufactured in the early 1950s.

I bought it.

I researched barrels here on AR and based up the feed back, I am going with Krieger. Specifics about the Krieger is:

Chrome Moly
24" barrels
1 in 10" turn
#2 Standard Sporter Contour
I will have special engraving done on the barrel that states: "Custom built for Ewan P. Hawk, 2006."

I just received the action this week. Based upon feed back from friend here on AR, I pretty sure I will have Roger Ferrell do the gunsmithing/sight work/etc.

Bill Soverns is going to cut the stock for me. I REALLY like the Ramirez rifle and will probably have the styled like that. My Merkel DR fits me like a glove and I'll probably have the dimensions similar to that put on this rifle. Although it is for my son, I'll chance that his rifle fit is similar to mine, as my father (Doc52) and I have a matching gun fit.

Given the importance of this project to me, I opted to have the best wood on the rifle and the best barrel and in my opinion, the best action.

As a special note, I am humbled to write that my friend and fellow DR enthusiast, jjs, has asked to contribute something to this project. Jim has offered to do a grip cap with engraving for my son's rifle. Jim, thank you for your friendship and for offering to do this for Ewan.

So with that, this is the gun project I am starting for my son. As I move forward, I will start another thread and post more specifics and what not for whomever is interested to enjoy.
