Can a large ring Mauser 1.1" 12 tpi barrel thread be recut to 1"x 16 tpi?

No. Once the thread roots are removed there is not one inch of steel left.

Well single depth of 12 TPI whitworth is .05335 inch so double depth would be .1067 inch. So, yes but the crests will be raggy. It's not a strength issue, but it's not cosmetically pleasing to the discerning thread connoisseur.

When I was a kid. I had the stick. I had the rock. And I had the mud puddle. I am as adept with them today, as I was back then. Lets see today's kids say that about their IPods, IPads and XBoxes in 45 years!

The ones I have tried this on, left too much of the old root groove in it to make it a good idea to me. So I never actually threaded one. Just turned them down to one inch.

Most aftermarket barrels seem to be cut at 60 and a little undersized . I agree that some / most can be recut but it's all about how the barrel was originally made .

If you have the barrel and it is off, you can always measure the threads with your thread mic or over wires to get an exact measurement. Then make your decision from there.

Ha ha ha... hell most tool makers anymore don't know what a set of thread wires are, let alone machinists or gunsmiths.

A frenemy of mine wanted to borrow my thread micrometers because he refused to learn how to measure over wires and being the nice sort of guy I am I waltzed over to the safe and gave them to him. A day later he came back and proclaimed that they were fucked and were off by .030 inch or more. He had been trying to measure the threads on a Remington barrel so I got out the 2 inch mic and selected the proper anvils and zeroed it with a 1 inch thread standard. Then I did the math on the 1-1/16thx16 TPI thread and got the standard 1.021 thread pitch, circle diameter and proceeded to measure the threads on his barrel. They came out to mic 1.0195 inchish, or .0015 under size of standard UNIFIED specs. Which of course is right in the ball park.
He proceeded to give me the bovine stare and asked: "Do you mean you have to go through all of that bullshit and math every time you want to measure a thread with those things?" "Well yeah, that's the general idea, but if you have to measure 100 of the same thread size it's a lot easier than fumbling around with wires each time!"
He picked up his barrel and stormed out. There is no easy way to measure a thread, unless you happen to be using full form carbide and you can measure from the OD. Which is also why I hardly ever use my thread micrometers anymore.

As an aside, the new Win 70's have the 1.062X28TPI, and those will clean completely at the 1" to be rethreaded for the old 1X16 tenons.
