What is the best solvent for removing the plastic finish that Browning puts on the rifles. The stuff looks good but I'd rather have a softer less glossy finish.

I've never tried it on a Browning, but scrubbing with 0000 steel wool has softened the sheen off of the Remington stocks I've used it on. - Dan

Paint and epoxy remover.

Before you do that, rub it out with automotive rubbing compound backed with the finest steel wool you can find. Use a fair amount of water to create a creamy slury. This will make it look matt. Work lengthwise to the stock. Circular strokes will show more.

I don't profess to be an expert on wood finishing but I have found it to be a real pain-in-the-ass to remove the glossy finish from gun stocks - probably because I am not an expert. I have, however, been very successful using 0000 steel wool to take the gloss off of a glossy stock. After I remove the gloss, I wipe Pledge or another furniture polish on the stock. The final product has a nice, matte-like appearance, and it takes less than an hour to do a good job. I would give it a try. If you're not satisfied, you can always remove the finish. I think you will like the result, plus the wood is still well sealed. Dr. Lou
