I would like to have my Savage modle 12FV with 26" bull barrel chambered in 22-250.
Rebored to 25cal for the 250 savage. I want a faster twist then most of the big gun makers
are offering right now. I would like a twist rate fast enough to stabilize the Sierra 117gr spitzer.
If anyone knows how or by whom i can get this done please let me know! THANK YOU.

Bearlake,

I advise against re-boring. It takes a long time to get the barrel back, and it only costs a little less than a new barrel.

SharpShooterSupply in Delphos, OH sells threaded and chambered barrels at a good price as well as the wrench to remove the barrel nut. They also make a great replacement trigger for the Savage. Call Fred at 419-695-3179 or email him at sshooter@wcoil.com to see if he can accomodate the special twist you want.

I called Fred at Sharp Shooters and he says he can make me a barrel for about $239. He said he only has a 1 in 10" twist for .25cal. From what i have found and read 1 in 10 is good for bullets 100gr and under. A 1 in 8" twist is recomended for 115gr and above. The 250 savage case with a 117gr spitzer would only be leaving the barrel at around 2500 to 2700 FPS maybe the 1 in 10 would be enough for this slower volicity? What do you guys think???

I used to have a .257 Roberts with a 1/10 twist. It stabilized the 117 grain Sierra Spitzer BT, 117 grain Nosler Partition, and 120 Grain Sierra HPBT all just fine. Likewise with a .25/284.

I think you'll be fine with 1/10 in the .250 Savage.

Bearlake,

Both my .25-06s have 1-10" and both shoot 115gr. bullets into 1/2" at 100yds. Granted they're moving 400fps faster than what you can do in a .250 Savage.

Two questions:

1) are you married to the Sierra 117gr. spitzer?
2) what velocity do you expect to achieve with that bullet from that case? 40.0gr. Re22 might give you 2600fps. Is this what you were looking for?

I have a Savage 111GL (limited run) in .250 Savage. Even with sorry bedding (and trigger) from the factory I can still manage 1.5" groups at 200 yards with Nosler's 115g BT.

I just bedded the front and rear pillars (but still need to do the tan; however, my scope is broken so I'll have to report later on the groups.

In my rifle, A 1-10" twist seems work great for hunting bullets up to 120g

I suggest you contact Sierra and ask them what the twist rate they suggest for the bullet you are interested in. You should be able to get 2600-2700 fps MV out of your rifle.

Thanks for all the info guys. The 1-10" should do just fine then. I have chance to buy 2500-3000 of the 117gr sptz for $200.00. I would like the 250 Savage in that big heavy Savage 12FV of mine for plinking. I think it would be verry comfortable to shoot with that light load.

Just re barrel it with a Douglas or Walther Lothar, both are fine barrels...I suppose the Walthers may be the best barrel in the history of gundom for hunting rifles. The Douglas are less expensive and they have all shot well for me.

I see wildcatting has come full circle. This post caught my eye because the .250-3000 is the parent cartride of the .22 Varminter (aka .22-250).

Good luck on the re-bore.
