Hey all,

Just wondering if our esteemed experts could give me some feedback on this stock. I bought the rifle about 3 years ago just because of the wood (didn't realize at the time that commercial FN mausers were so great). I paid 500, I love the figure and color and was wondering what a blank like this should run. It is also very hard, although I think the checkering is only 24lpi, the diamonds are really crisp, the checkering is just fantabulous.

The action is supposed to be an FN mauser, but I have never dared take it out of the stock (the inletting is so tight that there are no visible gaps between the metal and wood anywhere, I am afraid of cracking something putting it back together). I know Chic, go ahead and use it. Well, now that I am starting to play with things I might. It is in 270 Apex, which is 7mm necked down. The metal has no markings on the above wood portion other than the stamp on the barrel for chambering and 3 digit number on the action. They must have polished everything else off. It is gorgeous, with exception of a couple of ding in the wood that are not terrible.

Thanks
Red

Great looking rifle, Red. Looks like the stockwork was well executed. Do you have the dies to load for it?

Now that I would turn into something more classic, it does appear to be very well done and is a beautifull piece of wood though. Ill leave the $ evaluation to those more qualified.

ONLY 24 lpi? Nothing wrong with that, my current tools are ONLY 20 lpi, but I intend to get some finer ones eventually. Gotta learn to use the ones Ive got first though. 24 lpi is a nice medium between finnesse and functionality IMHO.

wstrn, I got my little template out, although it might be 26lpi, I will say 24 to be safe. it looks very fine, but that is probably just because it was so well done. I did think about rechambering, but don't want to mess with the barrel channel.

Roger, yup, got the dies, even fired it 5 times to see if it would work (it did, but no scope so no idea where they went) :-) You should see the 150g bullets in 270, WOW, they are long. I bet it will be pretty good longer range rig when I start playing with it. I don't know what the blue is on it, but it is still almost flawless. Has the left side flag type safety, which I have heard was normal, but I might have it changed as I prefer a right hand safety (most of my rifles have them and therefor I am used to it). Not sure though.

Red,
You got a very good buy, it is beautiful. Is that a 7mm Mag necked down? Get a scope on it pronto and report back.

Chic,

Just out of curiosity, is it possible to re-model this by opening the grip radius a little and taking off the monte carlo rollover? What's the best result you could hope for?

I took a stab at this with "paint". Much easier than actually taking a rasp to it.

Stu,
Yes it is. I did that same thing to Jorge's model 70 a while back. Extensive remodel, not that tough, just time consuming.

I have exactly the same stock pattern on my 25-06 and it is a Roberts pattern. It is very comfortable to shoot as is. If it were me, I would shoot it first to see if you can get used to it, then think about whether it is worth changing at all.
Gorgeous piece of English walnut, I believe, and very well executed stock work. I'm thinking Peter is pretty close on the wood value and stock work.
Let us know how it shoots once you get it scoped. If it doesn't shoot worth a darn, you could send it off to Pac Nor or some other barrel maker and they can duplicate the barrel contour to fit your existing stock. Or, you can make it slightly bigger and have someone inlet it into the barrel channel to fit as well as it does now. Just my 2 cent's worth- Sheister
