Marsh MuleWill a M70 classic take off barrel in 300 Win mag, fit a post 64 300 Win mag?
I have an oppertunity to pick up A factory 300 Winchester Magnum take-off barrel from a Winchester Model 70 Classic, 26" never fired. Will it work in a M70 push-feed post 64 M70 [The first ones with the exagurated barrel channel], "Free-floated barrel"?
Or will it require machining or controlled round type bolt?

dan belisleSome machining will probably be required no matter what, to ensure proper headspacing. If you're asking if the barrel will physically fit, yes it will. - Dan.

IdaredYes, it will most definately require machining. The classic barrel has a cone breech while a push feed has a flat breech. So, a certain amount of the threads must be cut off to remove the cone and square the breech. Then new threads will need to be cut or at least extended and the chamber reamed to accept a 300 Win Mag round. It is far from a quick change venture.

Marsh MuleThanks guys!
I guess when a deal sounds too good, always question it!
Thanks again!
Probably still talking $150 to $200 in machining and fitting?

mhoPardon for being dumb, but does the Classic barrel not have a cut for the claw extractor as well?? Or am I in way over my head??

dan belisleI don;'t know what the prices are like where you are Mule, but that is about what it would cost where I live. MHO, yes, the classic (CRF bolt) should have a slot cut for the extractor. As mentioned, all that will be machined away, then new/extended threads cut, and the shoulder cut back on the barrel. After that is done, rechambering. It really isn't that much work, I've done this on a 270 WBY 70, and a 300 Win Mag 70, just time consuming. - Dan.

Marsh MuleThanks Dan,
Well I guess, a new take off 26" barrel for $55.00 shipped to my door would get a bit expensive before I was through. Glad I asked before I jumped on it!
If it were a take-off barrel from a push-feed, it would just be a matter of installing and setting head space right?

dan belisleRight, but that could involve some lathe work as well, depending on the chamber, shoulder measurements, etc. But you would start a lot closer, as it were. - Dan
