Action work - Marlin 1895

Since Bill posted his question about reboring a rifle it prompted me to think more about reboring my 1895 Marlin to 50 Alaskan. I know JES Reboring will do it but I the last time I contacted them he said they didn't do the action work for the conversion.

My question is, how involved is the action work to convert to 50 Alaskan from 45-70? I assume the ejection port needs to be opened slightly. Are there any feeding issues that need to be addressed and how involved is that procedure or does the Marlin even need any work (other than the rebore) to change from 45-70 to 50 Alaskan?

Thanks in advance fellas.

Mart

I'm not afraid to try something like that but I need someone to fill me in on the details of what needs to be done, if anything to make it work. I'd hate to have it rebored then find out it's a long involved process beyond my limited skill range.

The rim diameter is only 0.002 more on the 50 and the case length is shorter by 0.005
Should not require much work(famous last words), I have been involved with making a Marlin in a 45/70 necked to .475 and it fed with no work.

The ejection port needs to be opened as you said. There is also the issue of the area from the tube magazine to the lifter. My understanding is that the geometry needs some work getting the larger diameter cartridge to 'make the turn'. Mine was done the easy way.... Sent it to Turnbull Restoration!
