Hello Guys I am soon to take possession of a 250-3000 “short action” Mauser, The action is a standard round receiver and clip bridge, not drilled or tapped. The rifle has been well used since it was manufactured in 1927, not worn out but certainly “worn in” - I wish it could tell the stories of the hunting trips its been on and the country its been carried across !! I am going to hunt with this rifle too, and I’ll be having a new stock made for it so the old one doesn’t incur any more dings. I’d also like to fit a scope. I appreciate that any alteration will reduce the value (both monetary and aesthetically) but it’s a “hunters rifle”. Your suggestions as to how to go about this, for both method and style in the most sympathetic manner would be appreciated. An initial thought is to fit the rear mount in the same style as TC1 has done on his mini Mauser project but use a barrel band on the reinforce to carry the front mount to avoid altering the receiver ring and marks. I might add that it has no bolt, so a new bolt is required, any leads on where a commercial bolt might be obtained for shortening would be appreciated. Cheers - Foster

GASP! Side mount? Don't do it! If you're real careful, you can shorten the bolt under the extractor ring..invisible!

A properly-done G&H side mount, although somewhat unwieldy in some modern hard rifle cases, is ALWAYS considered proper for an original rifle of this vintage and manufacture. IMO it would depend on the logos, if any, that might be lost or covered by the scope base. The Mauser Banner on the ring would make it totally off limits for any scope base while the Oberndorf provenance on the left side is almost equally desirable, so in my mind it depends. I recently completed a standard-length Banner build by using an extension front Redfield scope ring and fabbing a custom base for it out on the barrel above the chamber. That way the Banner on the ring and the Oberndorf logo on the side are still visible and unmarred. The problem with this arrangement is finding a scope with a body long enough to stretch, but with the short Kurz action maybe it wouldn't be so bad. I ended up using an earlier Leupold 4X with the longer body and have been well-satisfied. Regards, Joe __________________________ You can lead a human to logic but you can't make him think. If you're replacing the stock to prevent damage to an historic stock, why not do the same with the barrel and have the new barrel fitted for "scout" type mount and a modern long eye relief scope? Tentman Get yourself some good steel bases, clean them and contour them properly to the action clean the action and remove the blueing where the bases will be placed. Then soft solder the bases to the action, to restore (remove the bases of the action) just heat up the bases till loose clean up the remaining solder with wire brush and re blue the part. All the old German claw mounts are soft soldered and they lasted for more than 80 years! No drilling no holes!
