I have a takeoff barrel from an Interarms MK X in 7x57 that I would like to put on a Spanish Mauser. The Mauser is currently chambered in .308, and comes from the La Coruna plant. Is this a viable combination? Anthing to look out for in doing this?

Thanks in advance for the advice.

That is a standard 98 action & the barrel swap should work fine. Just have to time & headspace the 7x57 barrel & maybe tweek the threads a bit.

Try to look unimportant. Your enemy might be low on ammo.

Is it an FR-8? Confused Not all 1898 mausers are good ones and most Spanish actions are suspect. The Spanish have never been known for having quality steels. This includes the Santa Barbara and Parker Hale actions. Not all were bad mind you, but they were always suspect for softness.

By the way. Not all Spanish Mausers chambered fot the .308 meant they were chambered for 7.62 NATO, or even the .308 Winchester. The intended cartridge was chambered the same but
was for a lighter projectile with a reduced powder charge making it pretty much the same as our anemic factory loaded cartridges in 7X57.

Given a choice I'd rather have something else. coffee The 7X57 is too great a classic cartridge to be crippled by an inferior action! shame

I agree on the 7x57, I have an Interarms with a Shilen bbl in 7x57, it is a great cartridge. In fact, that is where the donor barrel came from, it is an older (mid 90's) McGowan takeoff.

The action is a 1952 La Coruna that was sporterized some time back. It is a large ring. The barrel is indeed a .308, and I have run full house .308 loads in it with no problems. Due to long term storage problems the bore in it was ruined, and I was just thinking since I had both parts in hand, I might as well get it shooting again.

I was mainly wanting to know if the threads matched. I figured they would, I just wasn't sure.

Since it is a "proven" action, have at it! As was already said, the barrel will fit. thumb

Next question, is it going to feed okay? It feeds good with the .308, but it looks to me like the body fo the 7x57 is a little smaller. Will this cause a problem?

I took some 7x57 rounds and ran through it at lunch, it feeds fine. Obviously, the bolt won't close, but they do feed okay.
