Question on finishing recoil pads

Hey guys,

Spent today fitting my limbsaver recoil pad on my Bansner Hi Tech stock. This was my first attempt at doing the work and frankly I couldn't be any happier with my effort. At the moment it looks as good as any professional job. I am at the stage of final hand finishing as I have now finished with the belt sander. For the final hand finishing I believe freezing the pad makes the pad material much easier to work with.

(My one tip is to keep the belt constantly wet with water, it seems to stop the pad from overheating, and allows the belt to cut through the rubber well). Taking your time and stopping for regular breaks also helps alot.

So, my question is this. I intend to get the stock finished in Cerakote, but I don't want the Cerakote to finish higher than the level of the pad. What is the best way to achieve this, hand finish the pad to one thickness of masking tape off the stock.

Or am I being extremely fussy?

Regards,

Michael.

This is MY opinion, mine only. Throw that POS Limbsaver in the chit-can and put on a Pachmayer.

Sorry, Just my .02 worth.

Properly applied Cerakote should be thin enough to not notice the thickness difference. We are only talking something like 0.002" of coating.

I would finish it pre-coating, and not worry about it.

If you go the other way, use scotch tape or other celophane tape. It is thinner than masking tape and will get a closer fit.

I'm with Jim on this, but maybe not as forceful. Limbsaver pads IMO are too soft and if the rifle is rested in a safe on the pad, will often crush and take a permanent "set".

Paint, e.g. Ceracote, Duracoat, Super-duper over-marketed overpriced spray paint, should not be laid on so thick that it drys proud of the stock.
