I put one on a 98 in 243 things shoots like a house on fire But I have to clean it every 35 to 45 rds to keep it shooting good. I Have shot many .5 and smaller groups at a 100 with the best was 1.75 group at 400.

Dennis: I used one to build a 7x57 AI once. It shot 1"-1.25" groups rather consistently with a good load. You can buy an E R Shaw barrel for just a little more and have (at least in my experience) a better barrel that fouls much less.

Life is way too short for me to spend my time and energy on barrels of suspect quality. There is a reason those barrels are so cheap. For the extra $100 or so I want to know the guy who made my barrel and that he stands behind his work. While even the best barrel makers can turn out a bum barrel, the probability of your getting one is lower and if you do get a bad one, they will stand behind it.-Rob

They are rough and bear to clean, but fairly accurate. Mine is on a VZ-24 action, started as a 35 whelen AI, but then was properly re-chambered as a 350 Rigby. It will shoot 3 shot sub moa groups, and will group cast bullets at or under 2 moa.

The key in accuracy is who chambers and fits the barrel, and the care taken in that work. With the original chamber job, I had to do alot of load work to get an accurate load, and inacarate loads were horrible.

I'm debating getting another one for a spare/loaner 35 whelen. For a primary hunting rifle, I would never again get one. I've use multiple applications of JB compound and Barnes CR-10, and still can't get the lands free of copper streaks. Life is too short to be spent running patches through a bore!

dennis; I have a a&b .308 24" s.s fluted h.b., boyds laminated varmint stock, bold trigger on a gew 98 mauser action. took about 10 to 15 rounds to break in. shoots umc factory 150gr 3/4" groups 100 yd. shoots reloads 168 gr mk around 3/8" groups 100 yds.
only complaint was the outer finish on the barrel, It could have been better
i have shot 700 rounds so far accuracy still holding up.
barrel does not foul at all cleans up with just a couple patches soaken in shooters choice.

a friend brought one in a 416 taylor, and a markX 7 mag action.... I looked at him, cast the chamber, faced it off, cut it back .100, and rechambered.. it shoots .75, with hornady's. and is now a decent gun.

I put one in .35 Whelen on a mauser action. Shoots 1" groups at 100 yds. which is about as good as I can do with anything.

FWIW,

I was at Shaw's in Bridgville, PA last year to pick up a few barrels for some jobs we were doing. At that time, I asked them about the A&B barrels that Midway was selling. The guy at the counter laughed and told me that they (Shaw) were making at least some of those barrels for Midway. Midway is just using the A&B name as a marketing brand name.

Barrels are like anything else, you get what you pay for unless you just get lucky...Most folks that get a bad barrel seldom admit it, because they have been ripped off...I have seen a lot of Shaw barrels that didn't shoot and a lot of Adams and Bennet barrels that wouldn't shoot..I have seen a few that did...

I have never seen a Lothar-Walther barrel that shot more than half inch groups with certain loads, so that's what I use, and yes they are expensive, but not a bunch more...

thanks to all who answered my question about adams & bennett barrels. i guess you get what you pay for. i saw a .220 swift barrel at midways w/s and thought it might work for a 22/250 ackley/700 remington project, but i think i'll pass.
i can get a shilen, select/ match grade blank for $227.00.
thanks again,

Hi Dennis
Just noticed where your from, small world isn't it.
I used a A&B on a 308 project for a neighbor, heavy copper traces after 1 round fired and it cleaned up hard. Put a Shilen CM on my -06 and copper still wasn't visable after 50 rounds, and what was there cleaned up easily.

hi paul,
i agree about the cleaning. i have a .17 rem. that is a bear to clean. and it sprays bullets if it's not clean. i saw a .220 swift barrel in stainless, chambered and threaded for 700 rem for $91 something and the wheels began to turn. but after looking at some of the posts i decided to hold out for a quality barrel. thanks for your reply.
