Yes, it will fit.

The big topic for discussion is to use the 257 Robt. in a short or long action. The factory ammo is for a short action.

If you remove the magazine block and trim the bolt stop, in your M-70, you have a long action. Now bullet seating is no longer a problem. You can throat the barrel and seat your bulets way out. I have a .257 Robt. on a Pre-64 30-06 length action. It is too long. I really should make an intermediate length box plug and bolt stop. Actually I may just ream it to 25-06. That is what we are approaching anyway.

My idea of an ideal 257 Bob. is a short action and throat. Light barrel, light stock, and Leupold 2-7X scope. 3000 fps with the 100 gr bullet and 2800 with the 117 is pleanty for me. A lot of guys like the 257 AI but I don't see the point. You would normally use that in a long action and seat the bullets out. Now we are back to the 25-06. To each his own.

I have a late 1980's M-70 in .22-250 that is a true short action. The barrel has seen over 5000 rounds and it's throat is pretty well gone. As my "varmint" hunting has been including more wolves these days I thought a 25 calibre cartridge might be a better choice than the otherwise great .22-250. I have heard that the Roberts will fit the Winchester short actions while it is too long for the Remington. I just wanted to know if there was any truth to that.

Cariboo, your short M70 is perfect. With the bolt stop and mag box spacer removed, you've got a working length of 3.1", which is perfect for the Roberts. And the 7X57, and the 6.5X55, and the 284, but I digress.

It's the perfect action length for the Roberts.

Yeah, what Rick said....nothing more to add.

If it's a 22-250 and you want to go to a 25 cal. what could be a more natural choice that the great 250-3000 which parented your 22-250? I know it's no roberts, but seems to me it would get you pretty close and be a whole lot easier to convert to. Have you considered this option?

Yes I thought about the 250 Savage a fair bit. While it too is a nice round I thought the Roberts would give just that little bit of extra edge as a medium-range all round rifle. There is also the fact that I have owned a 250 Savage in the past while I have never had a Roberts. It is more a "want" sort of deal rather than a real "need" I guess. LoL

i have 4 roberts 3 on long actions & 1 on a short m700 action.. i load 120 partations at 2.9" or 2.547 to the ogive(they were all cut with the same reemer)in the long actions. My factory m700 Mountain Rifle should be loaded 2.3720" to the ogive but can not because the magazine will only hold 2.765".. several weeks ago another poster said the new m70 short action magazine is 2.9".. If borden is making short action stocks i'll have 1 made next year in this configeration and get rid of some of the mountain rifle although it shoots .5-.75 groups with 117 & 120 sierra bullets.
