I am about to build up a 458Win but have yet to decide on whether to use a VZ24 with custom US magazine or a MARK X Mag action with magazine? I hear the Mark X is a good strong action that all ready comes with suitable bottom metal. It would also cost about half as much as a VZ 24 with imported magazine. Any thoughts on which would be best and why. PS, I already have a Walther barrel. Regards, Ad

I am not a gunsmith or resident expert but I have owned a few rifles that were built on Mark X actions - two 375 H&Hs and a 270. To my mind they had nice fit and finish and were smooth. I would take a rifle built on a Mark X over any Ruger, Remington or CZ action any day of the week. Lou **************** NRA Life Benefactor Member

I'd take a Mark X over a VZ-24 for a magnum any day /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Winston Churchill

I owned a couple and both were rough on the inside and polished bad on the outside. I hear the newer ones are even worse. Of course anything can be fixed, but out of the box they need work. Also, on the magazine , I don't think they use a different one on any action. I think they just have one size mag box they make work for all the cartridges and just open the feed rails for the cartridge. I personally like BRNO action and would prefer to use it and custom bottom metal if finances would allow. Except for the 375 they pretty much all use the same magazine box and guard. The 308&243 and have a spacer in back. That said I have never had a fedding issue. As TC1 said there were some polishing issues on the various MKXs. I prefer by far the earlier ones with the realese in the guard. The early Daly's were over polished. Like just about any new factory action they will need smoothing but it doesn't take long. I have used a number of MKXs for shooter(they get used) rifles and have been very happy. Heck for the $$ the MKX barreled action always gave me submoas. For a hunting 458 a MKX barreled action would be a grest jump start. Only issue is if you are spending big $$ they will not bring the resale as others. A FN would also be a good choice. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

On the .375 H&H I owned it had the same box too. They cut the front of the box out and tac welded a U shaped piece of sheet metal In to extend it. It was a rough feeder. Terry -------------------------------------------- Well, other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

Sorry that is how I meant it was different. With no work on it my 375 was not as smooth as my other MKX magnums As usual just my $.02 Paul K

+1.... i like my .458 win mag... the action needs some slicking up, but for a finished gun it's fantastic!!... go big or go home ........ DSC-- Life Member NRA--Life member DRSS--9.3x74 r Chapuis

Mark Xs are fine shooters, I currently have a 375 & 458. Not as slick or well finished as an FN and I wouldn't build an expensive custom with one but still good actions. Very accurate barrels. NRA Life Member, Band of Bubbas Charter Member, PGCA, DRSS. Shoot & hunt with vintage classics.

Thanks for the idea but I'm keen to keep it compact and want to use standard brass (425WR gives me enough fun when it come to unusual brass) . I plan to use the Woodleigh 458Win 480grn bullets to keep the velocity up but not sacrifice to much sectional density .

I have a Herter's J-9 action and I believe this was pre-MKX but Zastava none the less. It is very smooth and the finish is as good as most American made rifles. It was originally 7 M/M RemMag and I re-barreled it to .458 WinMag with no work needed to make it feed. As one poster said, the new MKX bottom metal leaves a lot to be desired with the release on the outside, upper edge of the trigger bow. It really boils down to what you are willing to put up with. The action itself is certainly capable of handling the .458. "I ask, sir, what is the Militia? It is the whole people.
