I was planning a rifle project based on a 700 action in 25-06 but came across an auction that has a Remington 721 in 30-06 up for bid this weekend. I know little about this action, is the samething as a 700? What about strength and function? Would it be a good idea for a custom gun or just be happy with the 700 I already have.

Thanks

The 721 is the forerunner to the 700. Parts that are different include the bolt handle, trigger, safety release, bottom metal, etc. Parts are basically interchangeable between the two. By the time you do all the swaps, you would be cheaper, and better, off to go with the 700.

I once converted the same action and the only problem I had was that this thing was made before CNC machines and the thread concentricty was atrocious. I had to chase the threads in order to make them concentric with the exterior and bore of the receiver and almost had to cut out the recoil lug opening to accomodate the larger major diameter of the threads. As a matter of fact the one I did was a .25-06 Ackley.

I have one in .300 H&H and dearly love it. It's not a cheap way to own a gun as there's a lot of Rem 700 in ADL and BDL out there that will sell for about $400 give/take a little

The 721 should sell for about $250 or so and is a fine gun except the stock is not conducive for a scope and the 700 is just a better bargain as Jim said previously.

However if one wants an iron sighted woods rifle this is hard to beat...It's extremely strong and accurate. A fine hunting rifle indeed.
