Hi guys,

I'm looking to build another rifle and thought I might pick up an action in the states when I go to Dallas in Jan.

I'm probably looking at a 30-06AI or a 300wm. I want a top loading gun so something like a predator, or a Nesika hunter.

Is it possible to buy one while out in the states? Is of are any of the smiths here able to suggest a suitable action or source?

You have three questions here; one: buying; two, exporting. and three; choosing. Of the three, I think choosing is easiest, assuming you live in England and want to take it back there. As for bolt actions; everything is available here; depends on your budget but since you already are suggesting a Nesika, I assume that is not an issue. Those will be harder to find than say, a Rem 700 donor rifle. When I want to build a rifle, I go to the local shop and see what trade ins they have so I can buy a doggy condition rifle and strip out the action. Or a gun show.

I actually have a tikka 595 donor here that was a 270 but is shot out so if i go with a donor I could probably save the hassle of exporting and just use one from here.

In terms of exporting from the us, is it a licencable component or something you can buy off the shelf?

I'm just not sure of the legalities there, so I don't want to fall foul. I've looked at a couple of smith sites and it seems you need to ship to an FFL so perhaps not possible to by as a visitor

To give you an idea, I was quoted $3000+ for a Lawton action today here in the UK, and a little more for the Nesika so you can imagine why I would rather buy them in the stateside possible!!

If you buy one here in the states, you will normally need to have it exported through a licensed exporter. I sold an action last year to a fellow from OZ and had it exported through another dealer who was doing some additional work to it.

I will have a few actions at my table in Dsllas; 1909 argie, pre-'64 model 70's, etc, along with a few rifles if get them done in time. Stop by and introduce yourself.

Yes, Actions (actually the receivers) are the serially numbered, licensable component of a rifle. Dakota Arms makes Nesikas now I think and the price should be half what it is in the UK. I don't know about exporting them. You might call Dakota and I am sure they can tell you how to get one.
