Any ever use bone as a trim piece for the front forend? I was thinking of some Giraffe bone instead of black wood. (not my rifle, just an example) any thoughts on the material? Thanks, John

I'm sure it could be done. There where pictures a few years ago of a rifle stocked in ivory I believe. Do you have a large enough giraffe bone already? If so start contacting some stock makers. Have you cycled your PF upside down lately????? God Bless http://www.davidchristmangunmaker.com/ http://i257.photobucket.com/al...wnhound/f66262d4.jpg

I posted a while back about using mammoth tusk....I thought it was going to be unique....come to find out it's done more than one might imagine...it's not at all that rare. I see no reason that bone can't be used if that's going to trip your trigger. Hey...it's your gun and your money. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." That is a Beisen stock. Not mine, just used as an example. I brought home a leg bone from Zim (the one that connects to the knee bone). Making a few knives and thought a forend might be interesting as well.

Bone forend caps and grip caps were rather popular at one time. Of the various materials, I'd guess the following were the most popular: 1. Contrasting wood 2. Steel 3. Pewter 4. Horn 5. Bone 6. Ivory So, yes, it is very feasible, and traditional to boot. My country gal's just a moonshiner's daughter, but I love her still.

I'm in the process of building a .58 caliber muzzleloader, and I've been contemplating using some elk horn for a sliding patchbox, grip cap (the burr of the antler) and a round for the forend cap. This is going to be my elk rifle, so I thought I'd make a theme around it... It's either that, or it will be a straight english sporting style. I think bone would look just fine. Shoot straight, shoot often. Matt
