Can a standard mauser action be converted to handle the 404 Jeffery ? I have one more left handed Zastava/CD action that I may want to take in this direction if it is possible. Can it be made to work? What modifiications would be needed?

Sure it can same way that the M98 has been converted to 404 for years. Not near as easy and a 375H&H conversion. Needs bolt face, box work, rails and feeding issues to say the least. If I was going to the expense and wanted it on a 98 I would look to an action viewed more as a classic. At least an FN earlier 98 even better.

As usual just my $.02

I have one on a 1935 Brazilian Oberndorf action, & it feeds flawlessly. Also, I totally agree with what Paul K said ....... quite a bit of work, & it should be a classic action for that classic cartridge.

Most original 404s were built on std length actions. From 1909:
