I recently floated the barrel on my Savage model 110, .270 win (laminate stock). Groups went from 1.5" to 2.5". It didn't have much pressure on the tip of the stock, but the curve of the stock wasn't concentric with the barrel, so I hoped floating would help. I would like to have the action glass bedded, but I don't have any money now. What is a good way to shim up the tip of the stock to get some pressure back on the barrel? How hard is it to bed the action myself? Any special tools or skills I should have, or should I just pay a pro when money is available?

It is not difficult. Do a search on here and you will find a myriad of responses to glass bedding. Apply a lot of release agent.

First, try a bit of plastic or cardboard in the barrel channel near the tip to put some upward pressure on the barrel. If accuracy improves, great. If not, try something else. Glass bedding is not too hard or expensive. I use Brownell's Accura-gel and it works well. Follow the directions EXACTLY and you'll do fine. Use enough release agent and coat the gun twice like the directions say and you'll always get your rifle out of the wood.Don't forget to plug all the holes with modeling clay.
