Need a new bolt knob on my mini Mauser (REM 799)

I got a new REM 799 in 7.62x39 a while back. It is the "mini Mauser" action. The problem is the bolt handel knob is so small I cant hardly hang on to it. I shoot a lot of cheap Wolf ammo out of it and that stuff is hard enough to cycle let alone with the mini little blot knob.

I checked Brownell's for knobs to put on. I think the handle is so thin I cant even drill & tap for a new knob? Any advise, please??

Here is a better picture. The knob is 9/16" dia. The handle where it connects to the knob is 1/8"

You could let one of the talented smiths that post here like Mark Stokeld, Westpac, James Anderson, or Z1R, weld on a new handle for you.

gunmaker, that's such an Extreme Makeover, it's just not fair to call it a MiniX any more. I'd love to have something like that in a 6mm TCU.

Super nice work. When are you going to stock it, or have you already?

It's a trigger that Pete Grisel used to make and install in his actions. I've got a Harre 223 action in the shop from your neck of the woods. Pretty slick little 223. Any idea if He plans on making more?

It's got a plywood stock on it. It's my truck gun. I'm going to bring the barreled action to the ACGG show in Reno for my application as a metalsmith. If I get voted in then it will be on my table. I've got more miniX floormetals as well.

Strange, I don't recall seeing any of them ever post a photo of his bolt handes here.

Here you go again, stirring up crap yet adding nothing substantive to the thread. Oh, and writing in unintelligible sentences?

That pic, up a couple of lines, that's James Anderson's handle. A beauty, ain't it? It's been posted before. Besides, since when does someone have to have posted pics of their work on AR for it to qualify as outstanding? I don;t think Darcy Echols posts pics here yet I'm sure most would agree that he does outstanding work.

Now, let's not let this degrade into yet another of your pissing matches. Instead, let's focus on helping this bloke find a competent smith to replace his handle. I'm sure all those I mentioned would do a superb job! Agreed?

D'Arcy Echols work has been shown in numerous magazines in close up detail. No only that, he was generous enough in some of those articles to explain in detail what he actually does and why he does it.

I know you will ask, "what is your point". My point is that a guy who has not seen photos of someone elses work and has not been able to see that work in person should certainly have a right to question whether somebody's work is any good or not.

Not to take away from any gunsmith here, I am a at home do it yourselfer! I have had several friends ask me to do the same thing maybe not on the exact rifle but not take away from the rifle being original? So I came up with a fix it to the problem for them, I take a small hard plastic ball and drill the cent out just large enough for the plastic knob to fit over the original bolt handle end and it gives them what there asking for without any modification to the rifle. Just one way to fix a problem there are many more out there.

If a person wants to see pics they should feel free to contact the smiths in question. But, I'm sure you'll agree that James' work is stellar, is it not? Mark has posted pics, right? I searched and it seems both Westpac (Malm) and Z1R have also posted pics in the past, so what was Duikerman's point? Again, starting a fight rather than contributing.

Now, what does a magazine article have to do with AR? Your alter ego asked specifically about pics on AR.

Duce1, I've seen that done and while not aesthetically pleasing it is a viable way to fix the problem. I've seen the benchrest types, many of whom are accomplished machinists, use the threaded balls meant for machine controls. This only increases the size of the knob and not the handle should that be a concern.

rem721, I agree with you all the way. I was just adding what I have run into in my travels . I am not a licensed gunsmith. I am about the only one in my area able to do this kind of work with quality. I am a licensed Tool and Die maker through the I.A.M. with over 30 years of experience in my trade. I have my own shop and work for home now and manage to make a living not a good living but a comfortable one.
Just to let you know I am not trying to step on anyones toes. I have the greatest respect for your trade as a gunsmith. I make parts from peoples tractors, bulldozer gears and just nonsense stuff to fixing and repairing guys beloved rifles and pistols that they trust with me.

No worries mate. You offered up a perfectly good solution to the problem at hand. It's good to have a wide selection of options available. Most of the target shooters I've known were only concerned with function, looks meant nothingto them.

Thanks for adding to the discussion. thumb
