Hey Mark, sounds good. I definitely don't want to notch the stock. Got any ideas on where I could find a later model Lyman?

Yup, that's the one, but, I would get a B&L mount and pop a Leupy VXIII 1.5x5 on that gun-if the receiver ring (front half) is factory drilled); this would also fit the rear-side holes for the Lyman 48 and these mts are easy to find, cheap, where a Stith in nice shape costs a fair coin.

To load for it, use your normal .30-06 loads, in my 20" bbl. Mannlicher-Schoenauer and Brno-ZG-47, I still get about 2725 with Nossie !80 Pts., what else do you need, really?

Gary, I don't know of any Lyman 48WJS sights right off hand. Ebay is a good place to look, but prices can get out of hand. Gun shows are where I generally see them. Figure on spending about $40-80, although I've seen them for more and less than that. A little finish wear usually matches an older rifle better and holds the price down.

If you find one of the pre-1950 ones at a good price, it would be easy to modify on a mill. The whole operation would probably take less than 5 minutes, that includes putting the sight base in the mill vice, scratching your head, saying "where'd I put that ball mill?" and opening half the drawers in the mill cabinet looking for it. I don't think modifying old Lyman sights carries the same stigma as drilling holes in Model 70s, but I could be wrong.

A Lyman 57W is another receiver sight that does not require a stock cut and is correct for a Pre-War, as it was offered on Model 70's from 1936 to about 1947, when the modified 57WJS sight was introduced. I have one Pre-War 300 Magnum (H&H) with a 57W sight and another with a stock cut for a 48WJS (but the sight is missing) .

Howdy all,

Well, it took awhile but I found a Lyman 48wjs to adorn the carbine. Thanks Jay Kolbe from the boards!

It looks just right, right now! Happy Spring to you all.
