I have read somewhere about using a small rifle primer to fire a percussion type muzzleloader. Does anyone know availability of such a attachment to fit on or in place of a nipple? There are all kinds of them for inline ML but that will not answer my question. I think a person could make one with a 1/4" bolt bored out to accept the primer. Make a cap for that with a short firing pin in the cap to be struck with a standard hammer. This could be a slip fit over the nipple or the other choice would be screwed in place of the nipple. Whats you think? Kenny

There was a nipple made called an "Accushot" nipple that used small rifle primers. I do not know if they are still being made but you could try to find one of them. for every hour in front of the computer you should have 3 hours outside

Different strates have different regulations on just how "primitive" muzzle-loading rifles have to be in order to be legal for "blackpowder" or "primitive" big game hunting seasons. Some absolutely forbid the use of any muzzle loading rifle which uses primers intended for cartridge pistols, rifles or shotguns. A few also forbid the use of "in-line" muzzle-loading rifles. If you plan to hunt "big game" with your rifle, you might check the states in which you intend to hunt, before converting your rifle to anything more modern than musket caps.

Craigster:: Thats it. Mark, I didn't find anything yet on accushot. Canuck, Ohio is pretty much anything goes. I built a inline on a shotgun action with 20 twist 45-70 barrel and use shotshell primers. They will either set her off or start a forest fire. I use a regular BP nipple in the breech plug and the primer is 1/2" from it. In 15 years, I haven't had a misfire. Kenny

i had one of those things years back. the nipple was replaced with a primer holding pin and then a cap with a pin was placed over it. it ignited just fine, but every time you shot the top cap would fly off. the unit even came with a small chain that was fixed on the cap and you would screw the other end into the stock. not very satisfactory to say the least

I made one for my Hawken. Its a cup that replaces the nipple and takes a large pistol primer. the top cap is threaded down over the nipple and preloads the anvil. The top cap also has a firing pin held in with a threaded bushing. I had to modify the face of the hammer to strike the firing pin squarly. The unit can be loaded from the half cock position so I don't have to manipluate the hammer except to fire the rifle. Ignition is fantastic and accuracy is great. Totaly weather proof too. Rusty, How much hassle/time does it take to replace the primer? Does the old one fall out or do you have to pry on it a bit? for every hour in front of the computer you should have 3 hours outside

The only time I would use such a device is a wet rainy day. The time it would take to reload is immaterial. Like a fool, I sold my 45 caliber round ball gun several years ago. Myself my sons and grandsons have all killed deer with that gun and I don't recall ever needing more than one shot. Most are shot under 50 yards. You haven't lived until you spend a few hours hunting and a deer walks out in front of you and the gun won't fire. Many time I have hunted all day and the gun won't go off at quitting time. I am just putting the final touches on a 45 caliber 1 in 66 twist and I or my great grandson will be using it next week. Kenny

It seems like what is is needed is a Lawrence mechanism similar to that on the old Sharps Carbine. The primers could be stacked in a spring-loaded tube under the hammer and pushed out in front of the hammer as it falls by a push-rod.
