I gotta Bruno mauser, which would be easy and cheapest to do. Turn it into 6.5X55 or 25-06. All I could afford right now is a good quality barrel and and maybe a trigger. I got dies and brass for both, just no rifle.

6.5X55 or 25-06, Both good.
I can live with either.
I don't see where there would be any difference in cost either way you go.
Hopefully guys more knowledgeable than I am will shed some light on the cost issue.
I have a 25-06, but no 6.5x55, so I'd go 6.5x55. Big Grin

I am not sure, has M3 by the SN. As for picture I'll take 1 today but as far as posting, I am already gettin a headache just thanking about it. I was thinking of just buying a barrel and taking it to smith, would I need to have any modification done to the action. I would like to have the 6.5. The numbers don't match on the rifle. The bolt number been ground off. It is currently an 8mm, but you guys probuly new that already. Sporterized. I'll try to post a picture later on. I might end up shooting the computer.

Maybe you should take the action to the smith first and ask him/her whether they feel that it is worth it to rebarrel the action because If you were planning to use the rifle with a scope you would probably need quite a few modifications, such as bolt handle, safety, fitting of scope mounts, etc. Perhaps you might decide that if you are going to put all of that money into it you might want to start with a better action.

There are many older posts here that explain how to post photos. You can do a search.
But briefly:

1. get an account at Photobucket.
2. Upload your photos to photobucket.
3. cut and paste the direct link from your photo on photobucket into the photo box here on AR. That is the second from the right icon (the picture icon) located just above where you do your posting. Left click on that and a box appears that says image URL. Paste that direct link (photobucket's name for URL) in that box and click ok. Your photo should then be displayed on your post.

And with regard to the question between the 6.5 and the 25-06, you might want to check to see if that mag box is long enough for the 25-06.

22 WRF, I had the bolt already turned, and the smith drilled and tapped for scope mount. I reload for it, but I am gettin another 8X57 with the numbers matching, so that will be my shooter. I got a photo bucket account, will try this evening.

O.K. the Mauser was designed around the 8x57 round, 57mm long. The Swede is 55mm long. For complete ease of feeding this should be slick. The Swede, however is slightly larger at the base. No big deal with a new chamber but might take a small amount of action work. 6.5 is so close to the .270 WCF, obviously, slightly heavier bullets. You need the weight? Large game.

'06 is 63mm. In .25 the bullets are smaller/shorter than the 8mm's. Ergo you can get away with the round in the 8mm magazine. Again, you are so close to the legendary performance of the .270... not worth arguing. You want a pest rifle. Long range 'yotes? P'dogs? Might be a little more desireable. Might.

Your bucks, your call. Luck.

You might consider the 257 Roberts or maybe even 6mm Remington. I've got one of each built on a 98.

Sorry guys no pictures yet. Craigster, I thought about the 257 and 6mm, even the 7X57. I just chose these 2 cause I have the brass and dies. It don't really matter what it is. On top of the barrell there is a G3. Does this mean anything. This rifle will be a hunting rifle Mainly will be a mule deer gun and the occasional elk also. I sure do like 6.5's. Also like the 6mm. I'm thinking just gettin a barrell. would this be all I need to do? More then likely a trigger. Right now my budget is 300 bucks if my WIFE don't find out. I'll work on the pictures also.

If cost is the concern, you might find a A&B barrel at Midway in 6.5 X 55 for your Mauser for $90 already threaded and short chambered. They may not have that barrel in .25-06...

That said....if cost is the concern.....sell the Mauser and go buy a used M-70 pushfeed for $250 difference.....Building on a Mauser is not at all a cheap thing to do!

Your wife is going to eventually find out. So the best thing to do is to tell her you paid alot of money rather than a little money. That way, in case something should happen to you she won't sell your stuff for too cheap.

So you might just as well get a good barrel and a good job installing it.

I'm having to make the same decision, the choice between the 6.5x55 and the 25-06. I'll probably choose the 6.5 because of the heavier bullets available for it. The difference between the lighter bullets' respective performances is negligible but on the heavy end 160 grs is a lot better than 120 grs, at least IMO.
