I'm getting ready to work on the stock on my 416 Taylor. This will be the first time I've used a barrel band swivel stud. How far forward of the action do you mount it. Also do you shorten the forearm a little as well?

rr340/ Just from rading and pictures of heavy rifles, they usually have a short forearm and the sling attachment is 3-4in. in front of the tip....
the main thing is for the stud to be out of the way of your hand on the recoil rear travel of the gun, I would put it temperary. where it looked right to you and then shoot or try simulating the recoil travel to see if it hits your hand or the sling get in your way swinging the gun......that's a nice little thumper ...ground hog problem???

For aesthetics the forearm should be no more that 1/2 the barrel length (when measured from the front of the receiver)I always cut forends 1" shorter than 1/2 the barrel length. These proportations always look nice. Big Daddy is right you don't want that stud slamming into the web of your hand.

Bear Claw, Like you when I build a normal rifle I set the forearm up just a little short of half the barrel (for a 24" anyway) I was just wondering if you should make it a little shorter using the band. I've really only seen this set up in pictures or a quick look at a show and haven't measured. Just wanting some input from someone that has one.

Yes Bigdaddy they grow jack rabbits big here in TX.

For express style rifles, a forearm of 9 - 10 inches measured from the front of the receiver ring is appropriate. The barrel band should be fitted about 1.5 - 2 inches forward of the forearm.

One rifle with an 8 inch forearm and a barrel band centered 10.25 inches forward of the reciever is a little too "tight" for me.

Another rifle with a 10.375 inch forearm and a barrel band centered 13 inches forward of the receiver is a little too long for my tastes.

For me, perfection is a 9.25 inch forearm and a barrel band centered 11.25 inches forward of the receiver ring. This is for a 14" lop and a 24" barrel.

I find it amazing what an eighth or quarter of an inch can do to the look and feel of a stock.

Post a picture when you're done.

I just measured my Ruger mag in 416wby. The forearm is 10.25", the rear edge of the band is 11.50" from the reciever. The barrel is 23.50" to the bolt Face. It comfortable on the shoulder and no problem with shooting it.
It looks great too. A fine rifle it is.

On an English gun the forend should be 8.5" ahead of the front action ring and the barrel band swivel half way to the barrel crown...the further forward you move the barrel band the lower the gun will ride and thats good...I like mine forward so that the barrel does not stick above my head when slingged or slung whatever...
