Does anyone here use one of these lathes or something similar? They are for hobbyist but the larger models would handle most gunsmithing tasks. There is a wide array of accessories like chuck with independent jaws, universal dividing table and others.

I'd just like to know what these small machines are just too small to accomplish?

I've been looking at the FF200, FF 400 mills and the PD 400 lathe/mill system.

Found your link, still wiping my eye's this morning.

I think you would be beter off with a larger machine. I didnt see anything bigger than probably a 11" swing bench model.

Weight of the machine is your friend, the heavier the better. Hole through spindle larger than 1.5" is a +. Small head stock is a + if you want to chamber through the headstock and spindle.

I personally wouldnt buy one smaller than 13"x40"

If you plan to do gunsmithing, you'll very quickly find that these machines are way too small for lots of things you may want to do. I second gsp's recommendation for at least a 13x40 lathe.

In my opinion you should look for something bigger. It is simple to machine small pieces on a big lathe, but it is impossible to machine big pieces on a small lathe. Increased mass and rigidity are your friend. I agree with gsp and toomany, 13x40 is the smallest I would purchase.
