Well I have a old Winchester 670. Caliber is 30-06 and theres a buldge in the tube. So you guessed it "I need a new Barrel". I love the old -06 but I also have 3 others that are all great shooters. So I was thinking of going with something different. I have a old set of dies for a wildcat (30-338 WM). I found a gunsmith local here in Denver and he can open the bolt and rechamber to that caliber without a problem. First what do you folks think of this caliber? Next is should I go with a new 30cal blank or just look for a 30-06 model 70 Take Off barrel? I do also have dies for 280 Imp. I know both are great calibers but cant pick just one. Any words of advice would be helpfull. Thanks Jovan

Do you have anything in mind you'd like to hunt with this particular gun, big or little? for every hour in front of the computer you should have 3 hours outside

The .30-338 is virtually identical to the .308 Norma and is an excellent .30 cal magnum that will launch a 180 grain bullet at about 3000 fps. Of course, with the proper handloads, your .30-06's will shoot the same bullet at 2800 fps. There is nothing you would shoot with one that you would hesitate to shoot with the other. Much the same is true of the .280 AI. All of these calibers are suitable for deer and elk, so pick the caliber that is of most interest to you. Staying with the '06 head size is easiest insofar as the bolt face and magazine are concerned. If it were me, I might move toward a more specialized cartridge like a 6.5/06 AI. This would give you a little more long range capability for game like pronghorns or mule deer, if those are on your menu. On the other end you could do something like a .35 Whelen for a brush gun for larger game, or even a 9.3x62.

I wouldn't rebarrel a Win M-670. Trade it for something else and go from there. It can cost more to fix the old M-670 than to buy a new rifle. New M-70 retail for $999 and can be had for about $700....... I have a M-70 here in .270 for $450.....much cheaper than the cost of fixing up the M-670. Be your own judge. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." I did also think of a 6.5x284 so I could seat the bullets out as far as needed. BUT I talked myself out of it because of cost of brass. I have also thought of a 338-06 or the 35 Wheelen but I have and love my 338 WinMag and dont need a nother big rifle. I did think about a 6.5-06 but not the IMP. I also thought about a 264 WinMag also but would for sure have to get a new 26" barrel. I do have a 25WSSM and a couple of 270's so antelope and deer are covered here in CO and in WY. This will not be a greatly used rifle but will be given to one of my sons when they get older. Just picking everyone's brain and trying to talk myself in and out of a few different thing. Thanks Jovan

I can't comment on the economics of this but when I had a 30-06 with a slight bulge, I got it rebored to 338 cal & with a neck & throat reamer from Clymers I had a 338-06, no other changes required. Just a thought. Steve.
