| While the case is .12" shorter as I draw it it looks like you need to set the chamber back by .266" to clean up the shoulder area. If you are wanting more horsepower. The 8-06 would be a quick fix and if you want magnum go to the 8-338. Simply open the bolt face and rechamber. I may require a little work on the feed rails but not as much as the wsm. |

| With all the talk of lug set back and poor heat treat of mauser actions, do you really want to chamber one for something with that much bolt face area? I don't think I would.

| I would be somewhat concerned about the small diameter of the barrel of the Mauser in the chamber area. Concerned enough that I wouldn't do it. It would be possible to install a sleeve over the rear portion of the barrel to re-inforce it( I once did this when rechambering to 8mm Rem Mag.) but I still don't think it's a good idea. As mentioned, the 8mm-06 would accomplish nearly the same thing and without the risk. Regards, Bill. |

I don't know about the chamber and barrel dimensions as I don't have any drawings handy but just on the face of it the above would be a reason not to do this.
Open the bolt face, open the extractor, most likely modify the feed rails and then it may or may not feed smothly...
Unless you absolutely must have a WSM in a 98 action it just seems like an exercise in finding things that can go wrong.

In all sincereity if one just loads the current 8X57 to the same pressure as the .325 WSM he don't have much to be gained by rechambering and all the hassle with feedrails and bolt face changes. Please don't look at the 8 X 57 as an anemic round as it comes extremely close to duplicating the performance of the 8MM-06 without those pressures.
Hell yes! Just go to any good reloading manual and look at the potential performance you could get just loading it to what it really can do rather than what the majors merely do. At modern pressures in modern brass and a good quality M98 action the 8x57 is the European answer to the sainted '06. Save yourself the agony, for Pete's sake. |
