So, I talked to Savage today about my .458 project,
They told me the action for the 7mm mag isn't as strong as the action for .458 win mag, so it can't be done. I wonder if I need to reconsider this project or if they are just quoting what their lawyers have told them to say.

That sounds pretty absurd. Huntingcat and I got in a running email fight with a PR guy from Federal right after they bought out Jack Carter. Huntingcat got a few boxes of 30 cal Trophy Bonded bullets whose diameters were all over the place. From .307 to over .309 in the same box.

When it was all said and done the guy from Federal said they had to do it that way because of the range of tolerances in 30 caliber barrels. Where do they get these people?

.532 boltface, and 62,800 PSI -- do you think the action cares if it has a .277 hole or a .458 hole other than that?

In all honesty, gun companies are in so much danger of being sued, I can't blame them much.
I just wish we had video phones so they could wink when they say something like "I can't recommend that."

Thanks guys,
back to work.

Sounds like they were trying to get you to buy a second rifle.

There are changes in some rifles that may not be obvious. When the Savage 99 was made in .308 and .243 they changed the steel and HT as I remember .I don't know if there were dimension changes.
Of course the pressure and bolt thrust are the important things .If they are the same you're good to go.
Liability law suits have cost us huge amounts of money. Buy a car ,gun etc and 20 % or more goes right to the insurance companies ! Frowner
