How is this item tightened? I assume take off the buttpad and there is a nut there?

No, there is not a nut; there is a through-bolt. I can't remmeber exactly what size, but it's between 10 and 13mm....11 comes to mind. I think it's supposed to be torqued to no more than 8 foot pounds or you'll risk cracking the stock.

It has a screw head for a flat bladed screwdriver also.
