Old 264 Reborn, It Was The Crown.

An circa 1962 M70 in 264 Winchester has been a project for the last two years. It never shot better than 1.5 to 2 MOA. Even the dealer who sold it to me said that it did not shoot very well. The barrel is a new Winchester barrel.

I tried a lot of things including puting a B&C stock on it rather than bedding the "orginal" stock. The chamber is .0005" out of round so it must be FL sized for.

I took an agressive wheel to the crown after a slight crown job did not work. The crown now looks like the throat on a Mauser!

It has been confirmed in four separate trips to the range that the rifle now shoots one hole groups at 100 yds with two loads and more are being planned. Last week it shot a .42" four shot group at 100 yds with the Sierra 120 gr SPT pushed by 65 grs of RL 22 and today it shot a .72" four shot group at 100 yds with the 120 gr Nosler BT and the same charge.

So now I have another rifle in the front row. It will be used for long range coyotes and maybe deer at medium range.

Those are super groups from a standard hunting rifle. I recently acquired a pre-64 Westerner in that caliber also. I hope when I get it scoped and sighted in, it will shoot close to yours for accuracy........Grant.

Mine is not marked Westerner but it's a Winchester 264 WM 26" barrel with the nut and iron sights.

I was very close to selling this gun. I don't think I would have rebarreled it as I don't like taking orginal old 70's apart when I can get a new one.

It weighs 9.75 lbs with the Conquest.

There is very little loading data for this old cartridge but I will work something up. Right now I would hunt up to deer with the bullets it's shooting now.
