The forward edge of the cocking piece ( the edge that the safety lever cams rearward is in a different position in relation to the cocking piece sear than that of a normal 98 cocking piece.

I think it can. It was the PME 2 position that didn't work, in my case. I was told by the smith that any of the 3 position safeties should work with a speedlock bolt. In my case, I have a FN left side safety that I want to try out. Good luck. Bob

That sounds like there is too much metal to grind away or the angle is too acute for the safety lever to cam back ?
Otherwise not doable?
