What caliber for 98 mauser action?

I have an old sporterized 98 mauser that I am going to take the action from and have a rifle built. It was in 30-06. I currently shoot 7x57, 270 win., and a 35 whelen.

I would like something with more down range punch and shoots fairly flat. It will primarily be for deer, but I would like it to handle elk sized game as well.

Thankyou a head of time.

Well without any action work, 338-06, 280 (but you already have a 270) Open up the action and you have 264, 7mmRmag, 300win, 308 norma, 338win.

Or you could build a .25-06 or 6.5-06.

Doc,
What did you have to do tp get the wsm case to feed through the 98 action? Did you change out the magazine box?

A buddy has a .280 Rem. Ackley Imp. on a M098, and both he and I have been very impressed with it. He hasn't had his magazine widened at the shoulder, so he lost 1 rd. of magazine capacity, but just how many do we really need???? He'll most likely take care of widening the front of the magazine in the future (just a detail he forgot to do), and have full capacity again.

It's pretty darn close on the heels of the 7 mag., and requires no bolt work. With good 160-175 gr. bullets, any decent hunter ought to take elk with ease. Heck! Some folks still take them with .25/35's and even .25/20's!

The 7mm. bore is a great compromise for bullet wt. and sectional density, and with the Imp. '06 sized powder capacity, you can move those excellent bullets out pretty crisply.

Go bigger in bore dia. on the '06 case, and you lose trajectory. Go smaller on bore dia. and you lose bullet wt.

Awfully good caliber, that .280 Imp. - AND, it sure does make up into a sexy LOOKING round, too! Not a bad side benefit, eh?

What about a .35 Whelen Imp? I know you already have a standard .35, bu tyou can never have too may .358 cal rifles! I hear it's great deer and elk medicine

Brewtlc:

That 98 Mauser can be made to work with belted rounds, fattened rounds, etc., but I recommend keeping it like it is and using a .470 head cartridge which will fit in the existing magazine. It will cost you less and be more satisfactory. The unaltered 98 magazine is too short for anything longer than a standard '06. My recommendation for combo deer and elk: .30-06 Improved. If you want to get adventursome, there are some very good 8mm bullets on the market now, so you could go with the 8mm/06 or 8mm/06 improved for something different.

You can build any thing you want on a good Mauser action from a 270 to a 375 H&H..

I would build a 30-338 if I had wildcat notions or a 300 Win. if I didn't, for downrange work....

I sure wouldn't duplicate what I already had as some are suggesting...

Over the years I have found that most of my customers tended to always build versatile medium rifles in spite of the fact they already had a bunch of them! I have always felt that if you have the middle ground covered with a 270 or 06 or7mm then you should either build a light rifle (6mm etc.) or a heavy one. In a 98 my favorite heavy cartridges are the 375/338 and the 416 Taylor. With either one you can shoot any elk with complete confidence. Regards, Bill.

You seem to need a heavy. How about a 375-338 or a 416 taylor? Or you could go with 458win. Or if heavy is not your bag, how about a 257 roberts or roberts improved or a 25-06. Make it a heavy sprotser barrel, and you have a great varmit\deer gun.
