I have a few Remington 700 7mm Ultra Mags stuck away. I am going to have one rebarreled to a 300 RUM. What brand of barrel would you suggest? It will be use for hunting. Also what other calibers can I op for for the Ultra action?
Thanks!!

There are a lot of excellent choices out there. If you go with any of the top feeders you wont be let down. But remember that even the best barrel can shoot like a shotgun if the guy installing it doesnt know his stuff. I would be far more picky about who puts it together than what barel I use (as long as it is a premium barrel)

Shilen, Krieger, Badger, Lilja will all treat you right.

I got rifles with Pac-Nor,Lilja,Kreiger,K&P, Shilen,Hart,Broughton and Chanyln barrels plus afew other not so well know all of them are good shooters. Was me I'd be looking at a Broughton 5c barrel be a good one chambered in a 300rum get alittle better velocity and Tim North owner is a great guy to work with. I've never tried a Rock or Obermeyer but hear they are good. I think Mark Chanyln worked for Obermeyer learning how to make barrels. Well good luck.

All of the above make good barrels, so too Douglas and Mike Rock. As M1 Tanker stated however, the 'smith is more important. A fair one can make a fair barrel shoot well, a bad one can ruin the best.

Oh, just to be contrary I’m gonna say Gary Schneider. I’ve got three of his barrels and they are out-f**king-standing shooters and are the easiest to clean of anything I have.

Gary’s got a contract with the Marine Corps now so it might be hard to get stuff from him though.

Gary also supplies the barrels for the Secret Service but, his wait time is no longer than the other barrel makers. Damn fine barrels that shoot very well.

One of my metallic silhouete rifles has a Schneider barrel on it and it is EXTREMELY accurate.

Is it Chanlyn or Schneider that make their barrels in reverse twist? Butch

FWIW, I have had great luck with Hart and Shilen barrels. I also know from friends that Pac Nor is a first class operation.

I've had superb results with Hart and Kreiger. The Hart bbls. I've used have tended to be more bullet/load-specific. The Kreigers have shot a wider variety of loads well.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a Douglas Premium Grade barrel either!!

This one wasn't even "broken in". Of course, back then when I bought this barrel, no-one had ever mentioned that arcane business.....

Yup....that's a fact. Douglas is not a second grade barrel maker in my opinion. I usually call them first.
