Help, which mounts for JC Higgins FN?

After having ordered 2 different sets of bases for the JC Higgins Model 50 I found recently I was wondering if anyone here could help me out. Apparently there is a difference in pre and post 1955 actions mounting holes. The difference seems to be the .875" rear base screw hole spacing on my rifle. Does anyone know what base to use on this rifle?

I think if you look at Talley bases, they will show two different rear bases for the Mauser actions. I assume one of these will work,I know the standard one is like .500 or .550 spacing, this is what my FN actions are. They show a rear one with .860 spacing. I suppose it could be re-drilled to hit the shorter spacing and the base would cover the extra hole as well.

I don't know about the JC Higgins, but the early FN's didn't come drilled and tapped from the factory.

So, Bubba could drill and tap to whatever his heart desired.

That could be the problem.

I have bought 2 FNs in the last 2 weeks, My 270 had a scope mount that atached to the 2 holes in the side that are factory drilled for a peep. the rifle is in such good shape I wish I didn't have to drill it but I am . It will have a set of 2 pc leupolds. The one I bought Yesterday is a roberts. The 2 holes in front are fine but the rear hole is 2 far forward for a 1 PC base so I am having it drilled for a 2 pc. Darn holes are not quite strait either but close enough to Zero with th windage on the base...tj3006

The following is a quote from Jim Wisner that I cut and pasted into my notes:

JC Higgins Model 50 scope mounts

The pre 55 models have the .504 spacing on the rear and the .860 spacing on the front.

The post 55 models have .875 spacing on BOTH FRONT and REAR.

As far as I know no current commerical mounts are made for the post 55 model.

I have one of the pre 55 and two of the post 55 actions set aside for rifles one of these years.

Fortunately, my FN CAME with mounts. They are very low, milled with a recoil stop, and marked with a single arrow for direction... Can anyone ID these??? Talley Rings fit perfectly...

It would be simple for a gunsmith to make a base for one of these. They could knock one out on a mill quickly, especially since they could use a stock one as a pattern for height.

My FN was a Sears version with the same long hole spacing. I sent mine to Dennis Olson and had him make a set of sculpted conetrol bases.

He can do the same thing using a blank for a
Leupold rear base. However, I like the
standard Leupold bases for "modified" military
mausers which fit over the ground off hump area.

I'm betting one of these will line up on the rear screw and then have the scond screw hole drilled and tapped. It will cover the front hole nicely too. This set up provides the best
distance for scope mounting.

Simply buy the two piece set for FN, Mark X
and Parker Hale. Drill and tap one new hole,
and voila.
