Redoing the M70 FWT stock

I just picked up a Model 70 Featherweight in .270 and like the lightness of it, but don't like the fact that the stock doesn't have a cheekpiece. Does anyone know of anyone who offers an inlet exatly like the Model 70 featherweight but with a cheekpiece. Or, has anyone done one from the stick and would like to show a photo of it. Seems like maybe the grip could be swept back just a bit as well.

The folks north of you (I think it's Northwoods gunstocks) can bondo on a cheek piece and sand it to your liking and then use it as a pattern and turn out a new stock just like the one you have but having a cheekpiece on it!

I'm with you as I'd like to see the featherweight M-70 with a cheekpiece.

22,

I believe you have posted some of your work here, and if my memory serves me I think it was also pretty good work.

That said, why not simply modify the stock you have using bondo and then have it duplicated
using a nice piece of wood?

I think SDH has a recent post on adding such a cheekpiece to a pattern using bondo?

That "pretty good" work was becasue it took me forever and a day to do it. Gotta find some way to shorten up the process. I did see that SDH thread about bondo and cheekpieces. Now that you mention it, I might give that a try, although I was hoping to sell this old featherweight stock after I got the new one.

Vapo,

I purchased a McMillan stock taken from a Winlight featherweight. I've been modifying it to take my Kimber 89 BGR featherweight.

Since the stock is fiberglass, I'm using acra-gel to add on at the bolt stop and to modify the loading port area, etc.

Would you suggest putting on a cheekpiece on this too? I've considered this, using a construction foam core covered with epoxy laden
fiberglass matting.

What kind of cheekpiece do you guys envision on the featherweight stock? Oval? Standard?

If oval, one like the pre-war mausers or a full sized one?

Don.....so much of this is purely personal and a matter of what one likes.....

Some want to emulate a historic shape while I love the modern classic with the shadowline.

In the end we should make them for our own desires.......as that's who's got their cash stuck in it!

Ever think that maybe you could get more out of a pretty good pattern than the old stock itself, especially if you modify the loading port area and make the L/H side straight rather than a drop down?

I paid 75 dollars for a very rough pattern for the fist stock I made that way some 25 years ago. My imagination tells me prices have gone up quite a bit in the last few years!

Yeah, buddy, I agree. I'm one of those guys who always wonders what others like too. Sometimes I don't know whether or not I really like my own idea, then after reading some other opinions, I do mine because I find the others terrible! Smiler Sometimes mine seems stupid after hearing a good opinion from another! bewildered

Is that like putting a cheek piece on a "featherweight" stock?

22WRF,
A while back Cabelas had a custom stocked FW with a cheekpiece in .308. I looked, didn't see it listed, but I have pics of it saved. PM me an e-mail addy and I'll send them to you.

Don't know if you are referring to a pre-64, but if you are here is one that I recently had done for me. It is actually on a standard rifle but the featherweights weren't a whole lot different.

I was referring to the current Model 70 Featherweight pattern with the little schnabel forend.

That is not to say I don't like what you have had done to your pre-64, by your older brother I presume. NICE!

Have your stock duplicated as is, then modify the new pattern.

Actually my younger brother finished and checkered the stock. Smiler
Dennis Olson profiled the stock from a blank and reblued the metal.

Here is a pic of the whole rifle.

Many thanks for your kind words. A long time ago someone told me every custom rifle lover should have a "Magnificient trio" which are built on three great actions . This is part of my personal "Magnificient trio" which includes:

Pre-64 Win 70 in 270 Winchester
Mauser 98 in 7X57 Mauser
Springfield 1903 in 30-06 Springfield

My lsst custom 30-06 is presently in progress to complete the set. I have other Springfields in 30-06 but want one last one which will be a bit more special.

22WRF, maybe I can help (maybe not). I have a pattern stock that is the current featherweight, with a cheekpiece, but it has three issues. The barrel channel is cut for a Douglas #3. The inletting is about 85-90%. The worst is, I got file happy and the bottom is too shallow for the bottom metal, meaning that there is no recess for the metal left, just the holes for the screws and mag box. Like I say, I got file happy. If you want it, I will ship it to you to bondo as you like and you can have a stock cut from it. Let me know. Send me a PM or email.
