I have around 51 years experience with guns and tinkering, replacing parts, minor 'smithing. However, I am trying to remove a "blank" placed in the rear dovetail of what used to be an adjustible sight. Rifle: Savage Anschutz (1963) model 153 in .222 "Blank" in rear sight dovetail has a concave semi circular area in top center. I first tried tapping lightly on the side with brass punch and brass hammer from Left to Right. Nothing moved. Then I tried placing the punch in the concave area of the blank's top and hitting hard. My brass punch bent terribly. Still, nothing moved. Then I switched to a heavy steel punch and hammered hard. The side of the concave area in the blank began to bend, but still the blank did not move. In desperation, I tried hitting from Right to Left, probably the wrong direction, correct? The metal of the blank's interior bent again. I then hammered on the blank to flatten the metal that was bent just to restore the shape of the top of the blank and quit. What am I doing wrong? I have a Lyman adjustible sight I want to install to at least make this nearly pristine rifle look original again. Help ! Thank you in advance. i encountered this same thing once, and ended up taking a fine-toothed hacksaw and carefully cutting the blank in half, releasing pressure.

Look at the finish of the blank real careful to see if it appears they may have pinned the blank to the dovetail. If you can't see any signs of pins, or a soldered joint, try applying a little heat. If worse comes to worse you can always remove the blank with a mill. _______________________________________________________________________________ This is my rifle, there are many like it but this one is mine. If the blank is bending, there is something holding it. I know that statement sounds quite simple, but it should make you think about how to approach the problem. I'd suggest free miners suggestion, cutting the blank. Since we are only talking about a minute of sawing I'd make 2 cuts, above and below the dimple. I'd probably stop just shy of cutting through and hit it with a punch to bulge it up. As mentioned, once it collapses a fraction it will move unless it is pinned in and even then it should move upward, hopefully enough to peek under to see if there is a pin underneath. I'd strongly suggest using a new hacksaw blade, 32 teeth if you can get it. Before cutting, scribe your two lines carefully. Then use care making the cuts. for every hour in front of the computer you should have 3 hours outside

The aluminum blanks that I have used have a set screw in the center of the blank. The screw pushes the blank up to fit tighter in the dovetail. See if you can get a hex wrench in the center hole.

If, after applying a judicious amount of kroil and allowing time for it to work its magic, the blank still will not move with a drift and hammer then I strongly suggest you listen to Westpac and have the offending blank MILLED out. Yes, a hacksaw will do it. But you are much more likely to bugger up your barrel that way.

THANKS FELLOWS !! You are the greatest !! I inspected the sight blank under magnification and bright light (failing vision). I could see no evidence of pinning or soldering. I carefully rigged a shield around the blank and carefully applied heat from a propane torch, then let cool. I then applied a healthy amount of penetrating oil and left overnight. This morning, I banged the side of the blank directly with a rig protecting the side of the barrel, using brass hammer and a large steel punch. The blank popped out !!!!! Yea! Lyman 16C sight was filed to size and installed. NEXT QUESTION: I plan on using Warne quick detachable rings on the Weaver bases already installed. Do you think the HIGH Warne rings with a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14x40 Side Focus will clear those folding sights? As you may recall, this newer side focus model has a slightly shorter front "bell" than the older AO models. I have the scope but am ready to order the rings. MANY THANKS AGAIN.
