lawndartTo Toughen Up a Stock Finish for Pattern Duty??
I was negligent, and let the action screws get loose on a Sako 416 Rem Mag Hunter model, (circa. 1991). One day in 2003, while plinking water jugs the stock cracked. I have acraglassed it and put in six brass screws. I am not returning it to duty though. The stock fits me very well, so I am going to use it as a pattern have blanks turned off of.
I am going to fill in the checkering so the whole outline will be even and smooth.
My question for the court is:
What might I slather on the stock so that it is less likely to have grooves develop after several trips through the duplicator?
Thank you for your time and advice.

Marc_StokeldYour current stock will probably be just fine. They are odten stronger a repair. I would need to see it to be sure. If you really like it, then have a stockmaker look at it and let you know if it is sound
As far as protecting from the duplicator-there is no way to totally protect it. Covering it with a couple layers of masking tape will help, but nothing is a cure-all.

lawndartThanks Marc,
This is the most comfortable stock I've ever used with a heavy recoiling rifle. It also works as well with the iron sights as the scope.
I would like to make several more like it, and inlet them for different actions.
I'll post some before and after pictures.
Thanks again.
